Spell memorization Help

I am having serious problems memorizing spells with my mage. It only works about 10% of the time....Please Help.
Swash/mage 10/12 now
Str 10
CON 16
DEX 18
INT 18
WIS 12
CHA 12
Game difficulty- Insane
I have the BG patch and Kevin's patch installed.
She is supposed to memorize at 85% what's going on here?
Another thing... When characters die they rarly are able to be resurected even though their CON may be 18..Which should always allow for res.. Their portrait just disappears from the right side once they die.
Could all this be related to difficulty level. The description of INSANE is monsters have double hit points damage it mentions nothing on res survival nor % chance to learn new spells

You either have some very bad luck or the insane difficulty messes up your memorization. It could just be random though. Anyways, why don't you just put the difficulty down to where you always memorize spells while memorizing then put it back? Either that or you're going to have to keep reloading.

Difficulty level could indeed be factored into the spell memorization equation. I also note that, for no particular reason, Edwin seems to learn spells much more easily than my kensai/mage of an equal level, with an intelligence rating as high.

Did you use shadowkeeper to edit anything?

If a character's portrait is disappearing, it's because they are permanently dead, or dead in such a way that they have to be removed. This happens on all difficulties greater than Normal (one tick left of centre on the slider.) The causes of removal are:
- Being reduced to -10 HP or lower...chunky death
- Being level-drained to level 0 or less
- Any stat. being reduced to 0 or less (ie Mind Flayer Brain Drain and INT)
- Being petrified (reversible with Flesh To Stone, but shattering makes it permanent)
- Ditto for frozen, except its irreversible
- Imprisonment (reversible only with Freedom scroll)
- Death magic such as Disintegrate, Finger Of Death, Chromatic Orb from a high-level mage, and Death Spell.
Because everything does double damage on the difficulty you're playing at, you will see the Chunky Death removal often. They don't call it Insane for nothing, you know. :^P

Way cool Kevin that explains it completely... Now how about the Spell memorization problem?
Like I said she fails like 90% and has an int. of 18. That must also be ajusted as well..

Kevin, that's an excellent post.

No idea...have you checked for any effects? You INT still 18? Rested first? Only change on Insane should be double damage.
I couldn't change that if I wanted to with all my fixes, though. Though the percentages are in tables if it's showing 85% then that's what it should be at. Maybe you're just having a bad run...

I used to play on hard level, and really the chances are worse than proposed. But I don't really care, always drink potions before memorization.

I've noticed that the chance to learn spell roll doesnt seem to be that random. Infact it got so annoying (especially after finding mords sword which is randomly generated and can't be bought then failing to learn it grr) that I now lower the difficulty to easy when learning.
But when you do get a bad run of memorizations it seems to break it if you return to to the main game screen and then switch back to the inventory screen.

Correct me if i'm wrong about not bein able to buy mord's sword please - I love that spell and have never been able to find a a store keeper that has it. Although sometimes you find it on a goblin. Weird.

About spell learning (not memorizing

) - I'm on normal difficulty, though, so take care to test for more hard ones.
Have found the use of the Potion of Genius and the Potion of Mind Focusing helps a lot. Not only they definitely raise the probability of learning spells, it allow also learn spells beyond the intellect determined limit. BTW, Potions of Mind Focusing work cumulative up to 25 intelligence, so, for me, even Aerie might learn any spell. It does not remove limit on number of memorized spells, though, partially because the impact is canceled after sleep.
Had a belief it is commonly known.

On normal difficulty spells are learnt automatically - the potions of genius et al. will only allow you to cram more spells into your book than the int of most mages in the game will allow.

Oops, I have also used the bad term. (It seems that I have played too long with the sorcerer, where things don't count)

Both potion of genius and potion mind focusing works accumulatively and the increased INT have an effect on both the learning probablility and the number of spells.
Potions can be bought in every temple, and the most cost-effective way to learn a dozen scrolls at once.

Not true enough, at normal is probability to fail, and more realistic moreover( after all, it is supposed to be true implementation of D&D rules - as far as it is possible)

sorry to be pedantic but youre thinking about core rules. Normal setting gives you 100 percent spell learning and max hit points/level but the monsters are just as tough as per core setting.

I'm happy to agree with you, most noble Lord (or Lady), i'm playing Core Rules, not so called Normal.
Thanks for correction,

A few people hit on my suggestions. I'm playing core rules BTW.
Intelligence has a limiting number of spells to learn as well (number and spell level(I think)). Only by increasing the Int. above a certain point will you be able to learn advanced spells. It is realistic afterall. You shouldn't let a low intelligence character memorize all the 9th level spells.'
I tend to use 1 or 2 purple potions (?genius) which work fine, but I also tend to have greater difficulty given the higher the level of the spell. This isn't written anywhere, but it makes good sense.
