well, collecting just about everything, and selling it off (cups, plates etc.) can net you a bit of cash. Also, check the crates and urns and such. You can usually find a few bucks in there.

The personal disposition of a merchant towards you determines how much of a break you receive on goods you sell and buy. That's why it may be a good idea to cough up that ring of health to the owner when you step out upon arrival.
He's friends with the only merchant in town, and puts in a good word for you.
If you want more money, early, consider the following options:
1) Dive for pearls.
2) Loot dungeons.
3) Loot shops and containers outside shops--but make sure nobody is watching you, and that a guard isn't even in sight, no matter what way they're looking.
4) Join a guild and do quests.
5) Gather the components of an alchemy set, make and sell potions.
6) Enchant and sell small items.

yup
Yeah, being a stealth class I take anything not bolted down or viewable by a witness. Usually take anything that costs more than 10drakes(now that I am higher level I usually dont grab anything less than 50drakes). Go find a merchant that purchases everything, like the argonian in Balmora by the guilds and sweettalk him/her til you get into the 90's for disposition. He will buy ANYTHING so I sell him expensive clothing, expensive items in general and illegal stuff.
Join the Fighters guild and do a few quests til the smith starts to like you and admire them to the upper 90's so you can sell stuff like armor/weapons for a good price same with magical stuff in the mage guild.
Remember barter a bit and your mercantile will go up. Even if you barter for 1 more gold than they offer that is still a successful mercantile task and it will raise your skill thereby giving you better prices.
With my mercantile over 40 and disposition to my good shopkeeper friends at 90+ I usually get the item for list value and some.
good luck

you'll be fine
Just look for Khajit and Argonian traders, they will buy that stuff from you. Not all but some, also most of the thieves guild traders will buy stolen and illegal items also.

alchemy = wealth
merchants regenerate their funds within 24 hours.
balmora has a fine alchemist who has 3000 gp and sells both components for many cheap-to-produce potions.
alchemy is hard to work up at first but by the time you hit skill level 50, youre making money no prob.
so, this is what i do when i need money:
1. buy 2 stacks of 40 components for a Drain Personality potion
2. make 35-40 potions depending upon success
3. sell to the fine alchemist (forget her name)
4. rest so she can regen her funds.
5. repeat

I'd have to agree. Once you get over the initial equipment outlay (which can be lessened, if you know where to steal alchemical equipment), alchemy is the best, safest, and simplest way to make cash. Not only that: as your skill goes up, you can make some fantastic potions for your own use. A win/win situation.

Also I haven't heard this said on here but you can get a quest to find out what happened to the taxman. When you finally find his body close to town return to the quest guy and give me the 200 GP. Then after that you find the murderer and get 500G... it's a very simple quest well worth 500G, and not hardly any running.

I agree, Alchemy is very profitable.
Mysticism (or it's Enchanting equivilent) can also put quite a few coins in your pocket. The Soultrap spell and some Petty-Lesser soulgems can bring you a lot of money if you trap anything bigger than a mudcrab. If you can cast Summon Ancestral Ghost, you can trap it in a Common soulgem for 4k gp; you can sell the gem and get an equal amount of trade goods to sell to another merchant (or use it yourself for enchanting an item with 100 charges).
The soulgems themselves (when containing a soul) are worth a lot of money, but the items you enchant with them are usually not. So if you need money, consider selling the filled Petty, Lesser and Common soulgems you possess for a very nice profit. There is far less equipment/resources required in selling filled soulgems than there is with Alchemy and you can usually barter the gems for far more (in gold AND loot) than you can trade in potions.
For anyone contemplating becoming a charged "Soulgem Supplier", you can find an unlimited number of Petty, Lesser and Common soulgems in :

EDIT: Tack's right about the 'Tax Quest', and right near the body is a scallop in a pool with a 200 gp pearl inside. That's 700 gp total very early on for little effort (killing some mudcrabs, the suspect and some fish)

Yes, I agree that selling charged sould gems is a great way to make some cash - if you want to be REALLY cheap, get yourself an amulet of summon skeletal minion (a lot of the enchanted item values are way low), get a bunch of petty soul gems, and start filling them. 300 gold a pop adds up really quick.
Alchemy can make you some good cash though, also looting Dwemer ruins and selling all the cups and pitchers can put you over the top pretty fast.
