this didn't work. I opened the console using ` and i typed fixme and closed it and nothing happened. I then tryed again, this time pressing return after I typed it and still nothing happened. I am "in" the flag right outside the fighters guild in Balmora!

I should return you sarcasm for sarcasm, but I'm in a good mood...so I'll just point out that ` and ~ aren't identical, since the latter requires the shift key, too.

If you type "fixme" correctly in the console window, then the text will turn another color (purple, I believe). If it's still not working for you (by moving your character to another location) then I think you're probably hosed and should go back to an older savegame.

It should work for you as with my dwarven character I had to use it many times as I got stuck in any archway.

Shoot, I just read another fix for this somewhere, now I cant find it
Anyway, if you know "recall" you can teleport out of being stuck, the same if you know Divine or Almsivi Interventions or have a scroll of either of those spells. If you don't have those scrolls you might want to take the advice of townsfolk when they say to always carry one just in case of trouble.
I'm going to look some more, but this little episode brings up an important point to remember: Quicksave often! For all of us who played the wonderful Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2, or any other RPG, you know that bugs will happen, unpredictable things happen in these big complex games. When they do happen quitting and reloading a save will almost always fix them, so make sure you have a recent save to go back to and you will "save" yourself a lot of frustration.
[EDIT:] Ok, here you go everyone: In the console, TCL toggles collision on/off, allows to fly around and through any barriers in the game. It appears it also allows npcs/creatures to walk through walls, so if one of them gets stuck somewhere type "RA" in the console to reset actors.
