Right now i'm playing IWD for the first time, i dont have HoW, but i'm looking at buying it, my question is, can i finish IWD first and after killing the main enemy go to the HoW, or i must go there before beating him/her?

You can go to HoW any time, but you have to finish the expansion to get back to Dale or import your characters that finished Icewind dale and start the expansion.
