Saved file bug

This is an old problem with new information discovered. Many will remember my post where I said that my most recent saved files take forever to save/load/clear game data from. Well, I've confirmed that there is a bug in the baldur.gam and/or baldur.sav files of those saved games. I've found through tinkering that the baldur.gam file contains character information (exp + items), area information (exploration of maps and chests), and quest information. I'm not sure what the baldur.sav does exactly. What would happen if I replaced it with the file from a different saved game? It solves my problem, but what would it do to my game? Anyone know how to hack either/both files to try and fix them? I've got my e-mail working, so I can e-mail my saved file immediately to anyone interested in helping me out. I've sent this information to TeamBG and Interplay as well, so I hope I can get this fixed.

P.S. Weasel: I found out what was causing my saved file not to upload on my computer. It was this internet connection accelerator called NetSonic. People that enjoy using attachments SHOULD NOT download this!

Magus if I knew how I would. I know it's something in the Baldur.gam file. Hopeful someone can help you.

Weasel: How do you know the bug's in the baldur.gam file? I tried replacing each file with a working one, and it seemed to help load times both instances. Have you figured out something?

Hey Magus um how fast is your computer?

It sounds like the .gam and .sav files are linked to each other, if so, then you would have to replace both files not just the .sav file. If you replaced one file and not the other the game would probably crash. In order to change the specific information in the files, you would have to de-compile the program because when the program is compiled (made ready to run by the programmers) its format is changed to hex code. I am not a programmer but do have some experience with programming. If there are more knowledgeable people out there, feel free to correct me or give more help.
In conclusion (finally, eh Image ) I would say wait for Biowares feedback.

Alienbob: My computer's Pentium III 850MZ, but that's not the problem. It didn't work on Weasel's computer either. It's an error in one or both of the saved files.

Out of the two you can swap (Baldur the one that can be open with wordpad) (Baldur.gam) the only one you can change and keep your original group is Baldur.gam right. I thought I e-mailed and told you that??

Alright the one I swaped had the information for all the quest stored in it. This I do know. When I swapped it my computer would run the game fine... Loading and saving..The only thing was all of your quest had been wipe out and had to be done again.

Weasel: I'm confused, now. I didn't see any wordpad files in there. All I see are portraits, a bitmap image, a worldmap file, and the baldur.sav and baldur.gam files. When I exchanged the baldur.gam file, I had different characters, different items, and different quests, but the areas were current (i.e portions that were not explored in the swapped file were explored in the mixed one) Nothing seemed to happen when I exchanged the baldur.sav file, but I assume none of the areas would have been explored.

Weasel: Are you using Shadowkeeper? Maybe that's it.

One of the files either Baldur.sav or Baldur.gam would still slow down my computer. One file I can not get to open.. the other will open with wordpad. No I download it but have not took it out of the zip file yet.

Weasel: That's odd. I just double checked the swapping thing, and swapping either one fixed the problem. The baldur.gam file seems to carry most of the game info, even though its about 4x smaller. And neither the baldur.gam or baldur.sav files open in wordpad on my computer. Are you sure you didn't download some sort of hacking tool?

@Weasel & Magus
I apologize if I stepped on anyones toes here. Usually I'm doing homework and/or studying while viewing multiple windows and checking this site. So I can get more than a little distracted and come off sounding like a know-it-all (which I am most definitely not Image ). I hacked a simple D&D game years ago changing files. Anyway, please excuse me.

Weasel: Uh-oh. Sounds like I messed your computer up... Image Maybe a file got changed during the transfer. Do all of your saved games have this wordpad file? If they do, maybe wordpad is configured differently on your computer, or you have some sort of program (like Acrobat Reader) that lets you read/edit it.
Itldrgn1: No problem, really. I could really use the help of anybody I can get, and you certainly aren't doing any harm. If you want to take a quick look at my problem, I could e-mail you my saved game. I wouldn't want to impose though, as I'm sure you're very busy, so I won't be bothered if you decline.
