You bump 7 minutes later?!

The Assassin is the backstabber no 1 in BG2. He'll only be as good in Hide in Shadows and Move Silently as you make him (and he gets less thief points to spend than the other kits), but his backstabber multiplier goes higher than for everybody else. Then he can use poison as well. See the class information on Gamebanshee for more info.

The Stalker is nice as well if you like backstabbing (a Ranger kit).

Do Renald's quests for some early good equipement.

is it short swords or daggers that theives are supposed to use?

If you mean for backstabbing, no, all weapons thiefes can use (without UseAnyItem) can be used for backstabbing.
(Shortswords, long sowrds, katana's, stafes, clubs etc....)

If you mean for roleplaying, i would suggest dagers or shortswords

@nba_brown;

You wouldn't by any chance happen to know someone called Baassie would you?

:D

Of course, if he/she was Baasie he/she'd hardly admit to it, would he/she? ;)

Daggers are, IMHO, the best thief weapons from a role-playing point of view.

@ Ode; maybe I'm Baassie and I'm trying to cover myself :D :D :D But I'd never admit that...or would I? etc etc

Daggers for assassins...all the thief weapons are pretty good from a role playing perspective (IMO) except maybe staves?

I'm partial to a club, but that's because I have a dual-classed Cleric/Thief. I just love the things you can do with these guys (Draw Upon Holy Might/Champion's Strength for backstabbing; at high level: Hide in Shadows, walk into a group of fledgling Vampires, Turn Undead: instant kills; Blade Barrier, Hide in Shadows, walk into a group of baddies who fail their saves without knowing what hit them;... :D )

And clubs!

Not really, think about blackjacks. A lot of thieves would have those.

Gotta love darts, very 'realistic'. A quite dart of stunning from a sneaky scrawny little thief will ruin your day. Maybe a blow dart should be 'mod'ed, need high Dex to get it in the base of the neck though. Maybe then collars for dart protection....

The possibilities are endless.
