Intelligence Question

Hi everybody. I'm new to BG2 and was doing some research on how to create a really good party. This link got my attention, but I have a question about it.
The link is:

The question concerns the paladin. The author states that the paladin should have at least 5 intelligence. Why is this? Is there any reason why I shouldn't bring his intelligence down to 3 and use the extra 2 points in something else? What role would intelligence serve for a paladin?
Thanks for the help.

Low intelligence will get you killed when fighting Mind Flayers. They are the reason I keep my int up in creation.

Would there be a difference between 3 INT and 5 INT in the case of fighting a mind flayer?

not sure about the numbers, but it helps to have a high intelligence The mind flayer thing is general, I don't know if he had a certain thing in mind to say a paladin needs 5 specifically.
The mind flayer Intelligence drain can kill you fast, so the higher your int, the longer you will last.

There is not a lot of difference between a 3 and 5 INT when fighting mind flayers. What the author of that "perfect party" is referring to is the old AD&D rule that requires paladins to have an INT of at least 5. It's not his rule, it's a holdover from the AD&D ruleset that is the basis for BG2.

You can plan the stats to optimize power, or just distribute
them to increase the "feel" of the characters.
I usually give very high INT even if I'm a warrior, 'cause after all
I'm the protagonist.
INT 3 would mean I'd be able to lose all of my belongings gambling with a Kobold.... assuming I was able to speak at all!
Of course you lose some potential, but don't worry, high stats are NOT necessary to complete the game, which in its original (not modded) state is pretty easy.
A well balanced party composition will be more than enough!
