I am all sad and lost .. finished playing SoA first time through the game ... Now what do I do?
I have been reading all these postings about how people play it again and again .. how should I go about it? Any suggestions?

Like should I play ToB now and import my PC from the SoA last saved game
- Should I play SoA again by downloading one of the mods everyone talks about? How will these mods be different from the main SoA story line?
- Which mod is really verrrry diff and will give me maximum fun and new adventures?
- I read about Darkest day .. is that a very diff story line from SoA.
- Should I play BG1? Will that be equally fun?

I can't make up my mind what I should do .. if some of you who have played many times .. tell me how you all have gone about it once the main game was over .. first time around? :(

Oh, I sure remember that feeling the first time I finished SoA. Take a long walk in the sun and consider what a marvelous game it is that can create such (artificial) feelings of loss... Then have another go!

I recommend you play through ToB as is was meant to be before (if ever) mixing in any mods.

Then create a totally different PC and bring along other NPCs for your second time through SoA/ToB.

You should absolutely buy BG1! A very nice game although not as technically advanced as BG2, of course. Don't hesitate to try IWD and P:T if you havn't already. And we'll soon have IWD2 and NWN as well.

The Sola and Valen mods are really good as they add new NPC's and make the game a lot tougher in general.

I gotta admit, my new game with these mods is not a walkover.

I've ToB but havn't startred yet as I wanted to take my protagonist all the way through SoA first with Valen (my party is downright evil).

But there are heaps of things to do, just keep browsing as some of the best ides are here in GB forums

If you get BG1, make sure to get TotSC as well....the major dungeon added is a real doozie. Or you could go get TeamBG's The Darkest Day (Nice mod for SoA)

If you haven't played BG1 yet - give it a go. I enjoy BG1 as much as SOA - something about playing at a lower level - different kind of challenge when just about any monster can kill you.
BG1 is not as involving in terms of NPC interaction - but it has a great story - and with Tales of the sword coast - the best dungeon in the whole series - Durlags Tower.

One other suggestion would be to try playing solo. I guess I just enjoy a good challenge - although solo can get boring at the end of the game when you are too powerful.

To add to the suggestions of the others, Epic Endeavours is another mod for BGII:SoA which totally alters the storyline and offers new adventures.

solo

Does playing 'solo' means you don't take a team along??

OMG .. how do you survive? I doubt I could get past the Mephit room in Irenicus dungeon alone!! Do people actually complete the game playing solo? What's the trick?

Just puzzled as to how you can survive alone against a bevy of magic wielders AND heavy armed thugs .. I find most fights difficult with 5 hunks on my team helping me out!!
Really curious!

more curious

Again out of curiosity .. who designs the mods and add-ons? Bioware .. or some other teams? Are these official releases? Do we have to pay for these .. or are they free .. how do the designers make profit out of the hard work they put into it if they are free .. (as it seems to be .. I peeked into some sites) ..
Sorry if these questions don't belong here .. Just that it seems I have time now that I am not focused on seeking Irenicus ... to think about aspects of the game and the real world that surrounds it :)

They are absolutely free!
People who like Ad&d see a oppertunity to use BG to create their own adventures. Just for the fun of it.
I don't think they make any money with their work.

Try new characters, new NPCs and styles of play.
Go with a plain warrior, a "summoner" sorceror, a multiclass thief,
a dualled kensai, a monk...

I'm trying all that I can, but sooner or later, maybe after some
other game, I'll have to go through the entire game with
a Kensai/Mage again, I had too much fun!!! :D

And yes, a lot of people did solo through the game.
The famous Two even finished SoA without reloads!
It's not impossible.

I went solo for half the game, but got bored by the lack of NPC
interaction......

dolonjha, I have played all the way through Shadows of Amn several times, so perhaps I can give you some insight about its replayability.

First of all, the things I enjoyed the most were the story and the interaction between the characters. I enjoyed watching how different parties interacted, and I enjoyed playing different characters who ended up in the same situations. Replaying the game also gave me the chance to do things differently than I had before.

For example, in Chapter Two, you can either side with the Shadow Thieves or side with Bodhi in the guild war. That is certainly a big difference. IMO, even a Good character can side with Bodhi, but keep in mind that Keldorn and Mazzy will leave your group forever if you do (the other Good NPC's won't leave).

Really, you get out of it what you put into it. If you let your imagination run free, the game feels completely new if you play a new character. You can also experiment with group dynamics. For example, in one game, I played with a party of Bards. Needless to say, it made the game more challenging since Bards aren't as effective in combat as most of the other classes, but from a role-playing perspective, it was great--it was all about attitude and finesse. :) By the time I finished the game, they didn't seem to lack power or ability at all.

For what it's worth, when I first started playing, I always had a full party of six, but once I had seen enough dialogue and character interaction to satisfy me, I started playing with parties made up of only two or three characters. In fact, I just finished playing a game of Baldur's Gate (the original) with just Imoen (a Thief dualled to a Conjurer) and a half-elven Ranger/Cleric. I missed some of the other characters sometimes, but on the other hand, my characters advanced much faster and became extremely powerful since they were so much higher in level. You just have to decide what you like best.

I strongly recommend that you play Throne of Bhaal, for several reasons. First of all, it's a lot of fun. Second of all, it brings a great story to a close. I recommend that you use a mod called the Ascension Patch. It makes some changes to the ending of the game that are a lot more satisfying than the original (without changing the basic premise), mostly by changing the way that certain other children of Bhaal react to your situation.

On a related note, I suggest that you play Baldur's Gate (the original) before playing Throne of Bhaal just because a very special character from BG1 makes a surprising return in Throne of Bhaal. If you want to, you can read the spoiler below; I'll try not to give away too much. But before you read the spoiler, there's just one other thing. Baldur's Gate will feel a lot different to you than Shadows of Amn. There's a lot less dialogue and a lot more aimlessness, and you'll spend a lot of time just trying to cross the maps. In that respect, Shadows of Amn was a lot more compact and took a lot less playing time. But some people like that about Baldur's Gate. Combined with the relative weakness of your character at first level, the game might seem like more of an "adventure". But since you have played Shadows of Amn, you'll already know how to play your character effectively and take advantage of spells, scrolls, and potions, etc. Also, in my own experience, I felt like my character(s) had bonded with Imoen, and I enjoyed having her in the party through all three games. In a way, it's too bad that you already know she's a child of Bhaal, but perhaps you'll be even more fond of her because of that when you play Baldur's Gate.

SPOILER

In the opening scene of Baldur's Gate, you see a very scary individual. Since you have played Shadows of Amn, you might already know who it is: your half-brother Sarevok. He is the mastermind behind a plot to throw the entire Sword Coast into a bloody war. And of course, you're the only one who can stop him. Sarevok overshadows the entire game, and in the final encounter of the game, you have to confront him. Obviously, he is your adversary. But even in the original game of Baldur's Gate, the question arises of whether he is evil just because he has the blood of Bhaal, or whether he would be evil even if he weren't a child of Bhaal. There's even a woman who's in love with him who approaches you and pleads for his life. Throne of Bhaal lets you explore that question, and the answer might surprise you. I thought it was great to see the story come full circle.

Von Dondu .. Thank you for that elaborate and most helpful reply to my current dilemmas ..
You have given a most wonderful perspective to the game.
So off I go armed with all these wisdoms .. to find my evil brother Sarevok :p
