Yeah, it adds 'Wild Mage'

I used one for about 10minutes before flagging(got turned into a rabbit or something with one of my own spells), what are the advantages of being a wild mage.

Wild Mages cast spells that can be anywhere from five levels below their current level to five levels above, and that can tear the hell out of adversaries. In addition, as they improve they get spells that help maximize the chance of better chaotic outcomes--which means a host of delightful effects cast on the enemy. Do a search on SoA using the word "wild," and you'll get a whole list of advantages, plus all the potential effects of the profession.

Thone of Bhaal adds a bunch of new areas and a large new main quest. Definately one of the best expansions I have ever played - you will enjoy it greatly the first time through - although the "monty haul" aspects are over the top.

To answer your original question - yes you can just start a party in Throne of Bhaal without finishing SOA.

Thone also raises the Exp cap to 8,000,000 and adds high level abilities and some new spells and summons. Worth every penny. :)

Wold mages also get one more spell slot per level than normal mages (like specialist mages), but can still write scrolls from all the schools of magic.

Wild mage ? THe only redeemable spellcaster in the game!

Nahals reckless dweomer is probably the single best spell in the entire game next to perhaps chain contingency but when considering nrd is lvl 1 and chain is 9 its many times more usefull

Oh and nrd can be used to cast chain contingency without costing a lvl 9 spell so I suppose it is better
