Okay, newbie thief on a quest to find some raw ebony. Where's a good place to start?

Almost any dwemer ruin will have at least one. The Caldera Ebony mines, go to Caldera for directions.

Has anybody found any use for the raw ebony, other than to fulfill quests and as a source of simple revenue?

Well, yes, but I was actually thinking of what a shame it is that you're never given the chance to make your own armor. Has anyone seen a blacksmith produce ebony, glass, etc, armor after the raw stuff was purchased by him?

There ought to be armorer's hammer, forge, tongs, and oven implemented through a patch! Similar to alchemy, just that we can play smiths!

Actually, I believe these -is- a blacksmith mod that lets you do just that. If I can dig it up again, I'll post a link.

There is an ebony mine outside of Caldera. There is lots of it in there.

Well, yes, @Preiter, but that wasn't the point--no offense intended. ;) Most of us know about that mine; many of us could tell you every single rock in that mine.

If smithing had been an implemented skill, I think it would need to be separate from repairing armor and weapons. It should also require very expensive gear to do well. On the other hand, it seems reasonable to expect that you could bring some raw ebony (or whatever) to a good, friendly smith, and (like Caspenar in BG2) have them accept plenty of additional money to turn around a good piece of armor to your specifications within a week or more. Who knows, might even be moddable.

That's a pretty good mod (the guy that designed it also designed the 'Bank' mod), but I've never been able to make anything except iron or steel armor...maybe my Armorer skill is just not high enough to try the better glass and ebony forging (it's between 50-60).

That actually makes me feel better about the mod. Maybe I'll use it with armorer as a major skill with my next character.
