No the rings do not have any use in the story plot, but once you get them both you can have a fairly big number of charges of two of the most useful/powerful spells in the game(as you have noticed). The problem is that wearing just one of them (even the one that does not weights nothing) the penalties are too much to hold a slot since there are many other great rings in the game.

what im gonna do is sell drop the heavy one and keep the other in my inventory it still grants me the -249 weight which i find to be a great benefit
:) i hate selling to much stuff when im not absolutely sure its not needed later on so i tend to haul a big load around

You are welcome :)

Usually the items that are needed to complete quests have no value when trying to sell them. There is another item that grants negative weight bonus, Quimbee's Armor of Many Pockets weights -100.

There was also a pair of gloves that granted a -50 weight bonus. I remember finding it before but in playing again I forget where it is. Demis...do you recall to location? I just aquired the armor for sorcerers and now my guy is weighted down too much and won't move during combat! :(

From what I remember (I acquired it in the first game I played), it was an item that you didn't have to wear. Provided it was in your inventory, you got the negative weight bonus. I've just recently continued playing the game where I left off (Glim Gardens). I''ve gotten used to using a bow rather than close combat items anyways. That's odd. I'll post again if I come across it again. Maybe it's in the catacombs...

I knew I wasn't going crazy....

You acquire the gauntlets after defeating the two gargoyles atop the House of Gems (while you are looking for the Gem of the Weave).

* Gauntlets of Light Burden, decreases encumbrance by 50
pounds

Although, an interesting point...the ivory ring has a weight of -249. You don't have to equip it, you just keep it in your inventory to get the negative weight bonus. :D Simple pleasures for simple minds...
