Which type of armor?

Looking for a little feed back here on which type of armor to use. Since I am now getting to replay about 20 lvl's of my game again, dont just go around killing people, I am revaluating my choice of using heavy armor while to AC and durability was great the weight was a killer. With full ebony and daedric with a daedric weapon I was using some 440 of my 490 encumberance limit. So my question is are the benifits of medium or light armors lower weight good enough to offset the lower AC and durability?

IMO, the best armor in the game is glass (great AC, decent durability, low weight, moderate enchantment slots). It's too bad that I really just get tired of looking at it after awhile.

I'm thinking of getting my Med. Armor skill up as high as my lt. armor so I can wear the Orc armor (just looks 't00 kewl' :) ), but I'm probably going to have to go into the editor and change the AC value to equal my glass stuff so I can 'justify' wearing it (I play mind games with myself :p ).

If you go with medium armor, do all the tribunal temple quests and you'll be rewarded with a medium cuirass that's as good as any heavy armor cuirass. Unfortunately, there aren't any other matching pieces. If you get a 'bugged' instance of indoril armor being medium, then that's the best medium armor. If your indoril armor is (correctly) showing as heavy, then the best medium is dreugh. Not easy to come by, I've only found a cuirass, helm and shield.

My game must be bugged then, cause Indoril shows up as 'medium' (45 base AC vs. Orc w/ 30) :p

Don't get me wrong...I REALLY want to wear light armor (I'm playing an assassin, for Chrissakes!), but I'm soooooo sick of that green, spikey crap I could go on a Vvardenfell killing-spree just to vent some angst. It's too bad the Savior's Cuirass looks like it was made from a mutated racoon and all the other Lt. armor choices suck.

Thanks for the tip, CJ. One of these days my character's gonna look like a badass instead of a green tree-hugger or Daniel Boone 3031 :)

Yeah, both indoril and dreugh are bugged. Indoril is supposed to be heavy, and dreugh is supposed to be medium. In same games, though, they are -always- the wrong type. In other games, they start as the right type might mutate in the course of play. For most who suffer this, quitting the game and reloading resets them properly (but only when they've temporarily changed, not when they've permanently changed).

There is a mod out there that fixes this, if it becomes an issue.

It's actually just as easy to change it yourself, if it's a problem. I was playing around with the editor and noticed that if you manually change the weight of the armor, then the program automatically sets it's classification (ie. Lt., Med. or Hvy.).

Something that finally makes sense :D

lol @ mutated raccoon! Can somebody please tell me what those two tumorous growths on the back of the saviour's hide are? They make me want to rename my PC John Marek (sp.?).

indoril is worth it as heavy, cause after...

ahem

corpus, you can wear heavy all the time and look stylish and be comfy...

dragonbone looks cool, but i had a serious problem with my helms until i did the bearclaw daedric quest...

my original helm was squid helm from trevanni, really a good itme, but looks so bad....

the bear claw helm looks great, its the skull of a smiladon, sabre tooth tiger or tiger skull, and has some killer bonuses set as constant effect...

i am wearing helm of bearclaw, dragonbone armor, daedric shoulderguards, (looks cool, will soon mount good ranged attack enchantments so its like shoulder mounted cannons...giggle.)

wraithguard...looks great, and has some killer bonuses too, glove of dominator on left hand...the daedric greaves you get in houde trevanni has killer feather spell, so it effectivley is no weight anyway, and bound boots...

gave up boots of blinding speed...made me look like i was on pcp, and using my new kangaroo spell i get around faster anyway...

hey, if weight is an issue, join trevanni and do the ash yams quest....

you get as reward a cuirass that weighs as much as orcish and greaves that weigh nothing...

both daedric...

do the deadric quest for bearclaw to get really nice looking helm, and you can see your own face again!!!

or just make some bound armor....

thats the best solution early in the game, i think....

collect spells in mage guilds and inn in sadrath mora, and you can look stylish and still haul away the loot...
balmora has a clothier in hlau compound who can sell you exquiste shirt for about 400, it can hold with saints helm cuisass and gloves.... all constant...

wear a belt, same shot, with boots and gloves, and do the trevanni quests and get a couple of nice orcish or ebony shoulder guards, and you will look cool, an be prepared to wear the best armor in game, dragonbone later...

bound stuff will train you in all 4 armor types too, so while you wont level up fast, you have a better choice in armor looks...

and its cheap to repair...1 gold every time...

or just take off and put back on...good as new!!!

The thing is, after level 35 or so the weight doesn't matter at all. Heavy is the best for anyone with high strength because you don't need inventory space anyway. At 35 or so you have a swelling coin purse already and you don't need to loot every single thing from a dungeon. I just loot the nicer stuff that I can sell to vendors and am done...

Heavy Armor?!?...Bah!!!

I'm playing an assassin, not a front-line heavy infantry grunt ;)

Seriously though, I hate min/maxing a character just 'cause the numbers make it 'the most effective choice'. Number-crunching in an RPG (or CRPG in this case) just destroys the fun of different classes for me.

So I'm gonna stick with light armor and some cheesed med. armor just to "stay in character"...if only in my mind :)

i went for medium in the beginning, then switched to glass because of the weight. then when i started finding daedric and also discovered the joys of enchanting i put together a set of daedric (missing pieces complimented by bound armor) enchanted with constant fortify strength for a whooping 1015 carrying capacity (half of which was used up when i wasn't even carrying any loot).
but after a while i got tired of feeling like a tank so i just dropped armor altogether. now i walk around in some nice enchanted equisit clothes, complemented by some nice jewelry. i even switched the big daedric catana for it's smaller brother, the wakizashi. if i'm not carrying any loot my encumbrance is 25! and i look much better than when i was draging all the plating around... :)
seriously, unarmored is the way to go!

And just to throw in a useless ancedote, my first attempt at a character, in full Chitin armour, hanging around in Ald-Ruhn in a full blown sandstorm reminded me so much of Tatooine it's untrue. It was very cool. :)

Now THAT'S not a bad idea, Frudi :)

I'm getting kinda sick of all the armors...It's not like you really need any at higher levels anyway. Running around basically 'Nekkid' may add some challenge back into the game with a developed character, as opposed to starting a new one all the time.

Like I've said elsewhere, unarmored actually isn't bad. With unarmored 100, you'll have about 75 AC. It's not daedric plate, admittedly, but for no weight issues it's not a bad compromise.

I've just had an epiphany which leads to the following questions:

Why do we work so hard to actually GIMP our characters? Is Morrowind so easy that we look for ways NOT to use our hard-earned skills, or make inferior character builds in order to create a challenge?

Does anybody else feel this way?

EDIT: Of course, the patch is due out soon :)

I think it's partly a hold over from Daggerfall for some of us. Back when we had to deliberately insure none of our skills reached 100 (or we'd forever stop leveling) for as long as possible, it was second nature.

Otherwise, it's a balance issue. Like daggerfall, morrowind ultimately comes down to money. You can pretty much buy your way to power through training. Which is cool the first time through, but afterwards it looses most of it's appeal.

Right now I have a game going with a new character. He's level seven, and hasn't trained a single point in a single skill. OTOH, half his skills are magic, so it's easy to practice them with cantrips.

*sigh*

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. As a Daggerfall affectionado, I seem to be caught in a TES rut. I find myself playing the sequels to games all too much like I played the originals...
