You are not losing your mind - the higher the better for AC in Neverwinter - by the way I have been working with the Beta Toolset for this game for the past few days - and I can only say - this game is going to rroooocckkkk!! :)

NWN follows the 3rd Edition of Dungeon & Dragons. The same goes for IWD2. BG1/2, IWD and P:T use the 2nd Edition, thus the difference.

bg2 uses 3e spells and classes but 2e rules. basically 3e is "the idiots d&d" and is super simple, to attract more poeple, who couldn't understand thaco and ac and such.

I agree that 3e is much simpler, but I also think that it is better than 2e. For example, in 2e, a character's saving throws got better as they leveled up, but the power of a given spell didn't increase with the level of the spellcaster. In 3e, the higher level the spellcaster and spell is, the more difficult it is to save against it, which tends to make more sense. In 2e, once a character reached a high enough level, their saves could become so high that they almost don't need to roll, but in 3e, a powerful wizard could still successfully harm someone, regardless of the target's level.
