Decision making

Hello all
At their most fundamental level I suppose that games are just a bunch of questions, and it is the way in which you answer these questions that determines the outcome....
Debating the validity of that argument or not is not my reason for posting, what I would like to ask is:
"Do you base the decisions that you make in BG2 upon what you know/suspect will give you the best outcome or what you feel your character would do (ie do you role-play your decisions)?"
I am faced with these kinds of problems all the time:
It could be something like choosing to do a quest or not based upon the requestor's motives/allignment/reputation (read: Do I do the quest for that evil lord guy in the CC??).
Or it could be choosing to open a chest in a peasants house and peek inside to see if there is anything good (suspecting that there isn't mechanics in the game to make my Paladin fallen if he looks the other way whilst my thief goes to do some "recon"!).
Anyway, I don't think that there is a right or wrong way, I am just interested to hear what other people think about this and how they make their decisions.
