total mage party question

I am thinking about starting again in either BG1 or 2 with a total mage party with maybe one or none dual classed. However, I have a couple of questions:
1. I don't think you would be able to remove traps unless you had a dual mage/theif right? There is no "remove trap" spell that I could find.
2. For some of the melees it is really helpful to send a tank in to soak up hit points, keeps spelling to a minimum, etc. But I figure a lot of the tank advantages can be realized with summoned monsters, animals, elementals, etc. Comments?
3. Finally, what mix of mages should I use to get the best balance?
Anyone ever done it?
