Soloing question

I'm trying to solo as an assasin, quite a challenge I must say. Anywayz, I'm trying to kill Rayic Gethras for Edwin and I'm stuck. The bastard seem to have stoneskin on even before the fight has started. I could easily kill him with one backstab if it wasn't for that. Now my first hit won't do any damage and as soon as he notices me his contingencies trigger and after that I have no chance to kill him (I'm still fairly low level).
Any tips?

You are indeed one tough hombre to solo an assassin...Heres my thought. Go in there let his defenses come up...then run out...he doesn't chase you. wait for everything to run out except stoneskin which lasts a while then if you have the cloak of the sewers change to a troll...5 attacks per round to remove his stone skin fairly quickly...oh also you need to find a way to counter his fear spell. potion of magic resistance or something like that should do it.

If you got a potion of haste then run up, stab him and let him trigger his spells. Then run down the stairs as he starts to cast his new spell. Go up and let him start casting another spell and then immediatly head down. Keep this up and he never gets to actually cast a single spell. When he runs out of spells you can simply take him on directly. He's nothing to fear in melee.

Well, the problem is that is I run away those stone golems will get me.
And I also don't have the cloak of the sewers, but it shouln't be too difficult to backstab that rakshasa with some nice poison on the blade.
Thnx.

Guess I'll have to kill those golems too.

I'm currently soloing as a Berzerker/Thief dual and had some trouble with him as well. Not only is he already wearing stoneskins, but the golems are immune to backstab.
Eventually what I ended up doing was attacking the golems, ducking downstairs and hiding, getting another shot in, ducking outside and hiding, getting another shot in, etc until they finally died...this cleared the 2nd floor.
I planted a snare (all I had available) on the second floor then snuck on on Rayic and stabbed him (stopped by stoneskin), ran downstairs and hid. My intention was to wear him down like I had with the golems, but he came downstairs and the single trap killed him through his stoneskin.

Hey, Haanwaas. I'm doing the same (soloing an assassin). IIRC, I was able to backstab him, but I ran into his defenses first thing. I went invis and exited. I did another quest and returned a good while later (since you DO have to go to the docks district pretty regularly). When I returned, one backstab was all it took. Again, IIRC.

Nighthawk, I don't think those golems are immune to backstab. I had some problems, but I finally killed them, and the rakshasa too. It took a while for Rayic's spells to run out, but now the bastard is finally dead!!!

Hannwaas: I did damage, but I was getting, "The backstab has failed" messages and wasn't killing them in a single strike like I should have with the 5x damage. The Rakshasha isn't so it dies quickly. I just stabbed a kobold, ran away and hid, took out the kobolds that followed and slowly moved in until I could backstab the Rakshasha without getting hammered.
Rail: Makes sense. If you wait over 8? hours his stoneskin should wear off.

I believe stoneskin last either 10 or 12 hours...that is the best thing about it ..you can sleep outside and wake up and still have the protection.

Ah, just go do another quest, like the Tanner or some in the graveyard. You are back in the docks so often, it's not really inconvenient.
I guess you could just rest, but then I feel I'm wasting time.
The cool part about backstabbing mages is that your poison always works. Even if they save they get half damage, but are still unable to cast spells due to the poison. Mages are a breeze, but you may have to be patient. Afterall, you *are* an assassin. Patience should be a given. An assassin with a deadline isn't a very good assassin, IMHO.
