Knocking people to the ground is a function of your agility in relation to the target as well as the precentage of the enemies hps you can do in a single blow. For example, if you have a good weapon ie ebony, daedric or unique and you wind up the attack have max weapon skill and a good agility ~ 70ish then you should knock most opponents to the ground on your first swing, exception cliff racers. Its not uncommon for me to go into a fight with my daedric lonng sword wind up hit the enemy and then kill them while they try to stand.

You can knock down people with any weapon even a bow and crossbows, as Azkor says it depends on your agility.

If I remember correctlty...
in dagger fall there was a button that glowed red when your swing was ready to do max damage. How does one know if a sword will do max damage or min damage after we hold the wepon back for awhile

Tab into 3rd person mode sometime when you're in middle of nowhere. Hold down tab and get it so you're looking at yourself from the side.
Swing normally (single click). I would try to make a pretty ascii drawing, but I suck at those, so I won't.
Now hold for a teensy bit and let go. See how your sword went farther back over your head? Hold back for longer. Look at the maximum farthest back that the sword can go before it doesn't go any more. Figure out how long it takes to get the sword there.
That's your max damage point.

I think the weight of the weapon may also be a factor contributing to 'knockdown'. I find it easier to knock a mob off of it's feet with a dai-katana, rather than a dagger. It could just be my expectations or my perceptions regarding the weapon I'm using, however *shrug*.

Think it has something to do with what % of their HP you take away in a single swipe.(thus reason that big weapons>small weapons)

That, indeed could be the case...
Is the knockdown only calculated with the physical damage done by the weapon, or by ALL the damage done by one (ie. elemental damage added by an enchanted weapon)?

I'm 99.99% certain it's only physical.
