Damn. Well, that *is* annoying. But I admit, I'd rather get a patch that can't be ingeniously broken, than one which requires a second patch, and perhaps a third. Conscientiousness is good.

well, despite their past of having patches that dont fix stuff promised, i find very reassuring that beth has a history of putting out many, many dagger fall patches...

some of you will say, maybe it needed them???sure, anything this gigantic and emmersive will require many patches, and i find their committment to patching very nice...

Well, no, hang on. I *loved* daggerfall. But daggerfall was released in a state barely past alpha, let alone beta. Daggerfall's initial release is quite possibly the buggiest EVER, beating out both Darklands (heh. Now I'm really dating myself) and even Derek Not-Smart's Battlecruiser 3000AD.

Even the final patch for daggerfall left the game with MANY bugs. Bethesda actually enabled them extra cheats as the only way they could ensure players could actually finish the game; without the 'auto-teleport-to-next-important-feature/critter/item-in-random-but-integral-quest-dungeon' cheat they included, I don't think it was possible to finish the game in the vast majority of games played.

Battlespire never was patched into a truly playable state. Redguard got better treatment but the voice acting there was so awful -- and couldn't be turned off, or even speeded up -- that I was never able to bring myself to finish it.

Morrowind is by leaps and bounds far more finished and polished then any other TES release to date.

Oh, not so. Microprose's Darklands was literally unplayable when it first appeared. Over the next four months or so it went through literally *eight major patches,* before it was up final release state. Shame, too. It was an excellent RPG, instituting some features that have since become standard, and with a couple of others that remain ahead of their time. Makes me wonder why nobody's tried to update it the way they have a few other Microprose products.

Still, Daggerfall was very buggy. I think you can tell how long people have been playing the series if they complain about the bugs in Morrowind. They've got nothing on those in Daggerfall. :D

Why, that's not true. All you had to do was pretend 80% of the game didn't exist and content yourself with playing around with only 20% of the in-game material and it worked just fine! :)

Shame, too. It was an excellent RPG

Agreed. It -was- a truly excellent game once you got past the bugs. My only major lingering complaint about it was how few characters you could have in your party. Really made it hard to balance all the character types.

I always played it with a charismatic leader/knight, an alchemist, a former abbess (for the clerical prayers) and a mercenary, but you're right, there were plenty of other options.

Microprose really deserves an award for the sheer bugginess of all its games in its heyday. Nearly everything that came out required a few major patches to work properly.
