Make sure you have got the latest drivers for your soundcard installed. Also, have you definately installed Direct X 8.1 from the Morrowind CD? These solved all the performance problems I had

Are you running Win2k? I got occasional random crashes and ~20 minute load times until I updated to Service Pack 2.

Crash at Random...
Bought Morrowind... I had DX8.1 installed.. I updated my sound drivers, my video card (GF3 Ti200--though anything above the Detonator v.21.83 seems to suck for me)..
The game starts alright.. it'll usually let me get to the part that you select the characters face, etc. then locks up. Or it locks up as soon as I get into the building. The farthest I've made it in the game so far is the armor shop in the first town. Yes, I've tried turning everything down graphic-wise.. I don't think that's the problem. I get the music and everything.. I just don't know.
I've talked to the tech people--and all they sad was "Update your drivers". No real help.
Any suggestions? I really want to play this game--I think it's going to be wicked good...I just can't so far.

There are a few tricks to try, such as turning down some of the settings. Try playing it at 800x600 and setting your desktop to the same resolution. Change the options so that there are no real time shadows (they don't do much of anything anyway) and put your sound quality to low.
To check if it is a conflict with your sound driver, open morrowind.ini with notepad (backing it up first of course

) and change the following key: disable sound=0 (change the zero to a one) See if that helps.

Tried:
..so I tried all that stuff. Turned down real-time shadows. Played at 800x600 (which it was at anyway), set my desktop to that. Disabled sound...
...and it locked up.
What now, o gods of gaming trouble?
