OK...i have finished the game a couple of times but never made daystars sunray work, i've tried to use it on a lich...(yes all of them including kangaxx)

but never, not a single time have i seen sunray injure a undead...does the sword require some extra skills or so?

Hmmm...the only thing that I would wonder is whether or not you are standing close enough to the undead when you cast the spell....If you are too far away it will do nothing....

However, if you are close enough....10' or so I think...It will turn those pesky vampires and mummies to dust....

In the case of liches....You have to be standing right next to the lich and the spell has to fire off after the lich rises up, but before the lich can cast greater mantle....So, you have a very small window of opportunity to use it against a lich....

That's been my experience in BG2, as well. You have to pretty close to get the benefits, and the undead have to have a clear line of visibilty to the center of the spell.

I wouldn't try using Sunray on liches. They have too many protections and resistances. By the time you knock those down, it is usually easier to kill them with with melee weapons.

Think of Sunray as a kind of fireball for undead that doesn't harm your party. Incidentally, I find that Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wilting works much better on vampires.

I've never even looked for Daystar. Reasons:

1. At first, I didn't know it existed.
2. When I found out, I figured I got through the game with my two Priests just fine.
3. Some moron told me the sword was useless.

 Some people in these forums...

I personally think that the sword is just too powerful. What fun is the game if there is no challenge? Unless you have the setting on "Insane". :)

Actually I have the same problem with Vhailor's Helm, Simulacrum just doesn't work...

Which is a damned shame, considering how useful another version of the party's tank would be. I keep it around for the AC bonus, but I'd like to get Simulacrum to fire, if anyone has any ideas.

So your character, protected from undead, walking into a room full of vampires and exloding the lot of them with Daystar is not fun then? :D

I think it's handy, maybe a bit powerful, but not too much, bosses
don't really fear it.
I killed Kangaxx's FIRST form with it...

@jerubal: really annoying, maybe some talented guy like Sabre could help...

Well, actually, I *do* have it set that way. Live in interesting times and all that sort of thing, you know. ;) But I understand what you mean. It astonishes to no end how people want god weapons to remove all sense of accomplishment in a game. I mean, it's fun once to slice through bad-ass demonic bosses like a kinzu knife operating on choice beef (or, for those of you who are vegans, sweet potatoes), but after a short while it becomes empty for lack of challenge. :)

dios: When you use the Sunray ability of the Daystar, did you see the casting animation of the spell?

jerubal: If you have ToB then install the bug fix pack from Baldurdash - there's a fix for Vhailor's Helm in it. Although if you have other things installed other than the original game - or if you don't have ToB; then just download that fix by itself, scroll down a bit and look for it on that page.

It's true, but actually, knowing the game so well, it's fun to pass "normal" monsters in a breeze, heading straight for the REAL challenges, that require a LOT of reloads!
Mostly, from mods.
Have you tried the new Lich in the Docks area? Man....

I'm just about to try the new Improved Bodhi + Undead Solaufein!!
help....
I already know..
I'm dead.....

I know what u mean Littiz........Ive tried the new linch in the Docks district to.
I just coulnt defeat it without losing allmost all my party members. So i waited after the underdark.....then he (or she) was the one who got sliced
(good startegy: make sure u allways have a summon near the Linch so it casts all the spells on that one oh yeah remember a zone of sweet air to)

And Bodhi.......well I dont want to tell to much. But damn she is hard to fight with all her improvements.......OMG...took my like a heck of reloads

-I rest my case

Thanks Sabre... Although I find it odd that I was SO lucky on that magic resistance roll and yet I always got a real kicking from mages. *grumble grumble*

Line of sight is correct.
I am playing through BG 2 again.
And i used the sunray, killed 2 vamps in chapter 3 as they were in front of me.
1 got away as it was not in the line of sight of my character.

not really, I cheaped to get it (made yoshi invisible and had him pick the lock on chest, and run before the lich did anything except yell) Then sent my fighter in with is, cast the sunray at the other end of the room, and it did around 56 dmg. to the lich, the it was just chow chop (the sunray interupted his spells) and the lich was no longer undead.

Whaddaya mean CHEAPED?

I would consider it "tactically solved", I did the same.
When I returned-from the Underdark that is-He didn't have time to breath before I nailed the SoaB! :D

Hasta la V ista, Baby!

I generally relied on helm of brilliance (i think thats the name), far more useful for my cleric

What's this about Daystar being useless?! omg

+++++++++++++++SPOILER++++++++++++++++++++

Boots of speed + improved invisibility and cloak of non-detection on Yoshimo, have him run into the crypt where you find daystar, have him quickly pick the lock and open the chest, then run out.. By the time the lich realizes he's in there and reacts to him he's already gone with the sword.. Then, give it to your tank (I prefer a two-weapon fighting ranger), give the tank the boots of speed, have him run back into the crypt, walk right up to the lich and click your daystar button..

Wait about 1 second, watch as the beam of red light comes from the sky and then look very closely at your [ info ] window at the bottom of your screen and smile as this happens:

(allorn = my character)
Allorn casts Sunray
Allorn deals 1024 damage to Lich
Lich - Death

I've had similiar results with all liches so far.

Imagine Sunray as a very very powerful version of "Turn Undead"... If it doesn't destroy them, it will come damn close.

I agree, however I never got the damage into the thousands before, You know the guy who begs for your help, right after give Bayle the money? Well, I used the sunray on them, and waited for them to be destroyed... It only did about 12 to each WHY????
in the mean-time, the leader drained my char. of about 8 levles before I could react (putting him at lv. 2)
