General storyline question - newbie!

Is BGII story-line based, as in I HAVE to go from one place to another, or is it like one big world where I can go anywhere I want?...for example I didn't pick up Yoshimo cause I don't want to waste my time with him (him nto being in my future planned party nor do I want to deal with him being a traitor). I'm gonna be missing thieving skills once Imoen leaves, and I was wondering if I could just go from the prisons and wander to the gov district to pick up Jan and then go back to where I Was before? And...by not picking up Yoshimo and not going thru the traitor storyline, do I lose out on some good exp?
Thanks

The game is linear, but not to an extent where you have no exploration. Who can wander around for as long as you like before going to the asylum.

The answer to your Yoshimo question, yes you do loose out on some good exp.
Spoiler below.........
You are forced to kill Yoshimo but you can then retrieve his heart and redeem him at the temple of Ilmater(sp?) for 300,000 exp!
pretty nice...
And since I know he goes traitor I always dual class him just before I rest in the asylum. let's see a first level......hmm I can't remember what I dueled him too but he couldn't hit me later

I allowed Yoshimo to join my party since you need a good thief after Imoen is taken by the Cowled Wizards. I always dismissed him shortly before finishing a quest and picked him again up. This way you can command Yoshimo's thieving skills, retreive his heart without wasting too much xp. It's kind of cheese, of course.

Yoshimo is available in the Copper Coronet in the Slums(So long as you didn't kill him). He is at the far right (near the bullies). - Curdis
