Lost my stronghold/Ranger protector status?!

Okay.. So, I did the required ranger quests, up to the point where you get the necklace from the "humans" that are desicrating the forest. Then I went off to take care of some other quests and come back to rest near my cabin in the forest, and firstly, it says "you are not allowed to rest at this time".. It even says this at inns! Then, I find my cabin has been barred from the inside and the contents of the cabin removed. When I go to the mayor of the town he tells me I am no longer worthy of my ranger protector status and he took back the cabin.
....Wtf? I have a reputation of 18.

Normally, you lose the cabin and your status as Ranger-Protector if you fail to complete one of the quests on time. After acquiring the necklace, you were supposed to take it to Lord Tombelthan, then report back to the Forest Spirit. It sounds like the timer expired when you went off to take care of other quests and you got stuck in the middle of a dialogue script (that's why you couldn't rest). It's possible to recover from a situation like that by resetting the appropriate Global Variables and the timer, but I don't know exactly what they are off the top of my head.

Just to clarify, I DID take the necklace to the "mayor" or "lord" or whatever of that town.. I also BELIEVE I spoke to the spirit of the forest and she said "I sense your quest has been completed, good job ranger", etc.. I then saved, left for town, did a quest there, and when I got done with the planar prison quest I couldn't rest AT ALL anywhere.. (not even in inns) and I somehow lost my cabin/ranger status. (I'm still a ranger, just not protector).
Anyhow..

The quest you did is only the first quest for the Ranger Stronghold, each quest comes about 3 days after you've completed the previous one. Delon should have come and tell you about your second quest.
By the way, did you give the kids the swords and wine? Because you lose the stronghold if you did.

I had the same problem: I gave the KIDS some ale and a sword......then they went of to adventure and the whole town got angry at me so I lost the cabin.
I think this is what you did

I gave them the 3 bastard swords, but no ale.

Then that's how you lost the stronghold. If you give them anything - swords or ale - you'll lose the stronghold.

Are you sure about that? Losing the stronghold if you give them swords? I DID save them from the monsters, Plus I believe you get experience for giving them the swords..
Anyway, I think it was the timer that ran out and I was supposed to do a quest and missed it due to in-game-timers. I re-loaded and re-did some quests and all seems well so far. We shall see if I lose it again because I gave the kids swords.

LOL...........It are really the swords you gave them.
Talk to one of the citizens there, there are mad at you because now they left to go off and adventure.
It isnt the timer. The swords alone are enough.
