can I still do it later in the game, or have I missed my chance?

to answer your question, no you haven't missed your chance. When you advance to the third chapter, there will be a smithy ready to improve your weapons for you. and when you do eventually go back to the city of NW, you can improve them one last time in chapter 4

So the weapons will get better? Good. It would be a long game with this plain old Greatsword +1.

And can I buy a girdle of Fire giant strength somewhere. It is practically the only thing I have to buy, playing a monk.
