What happens when you try to use the +4 weapon on the beast? Do you hear a comment that "my weapon has no effect?"

Spoiler...
I don't think Daystar will work, since it is rated as +2 for what sorts of non-undead monsters it will hit.
There is a +3 mace Skullcrusher you get from the Deepgnome if you free the one gnome from the soul jail.
There is a rockin +4 halberd Dragonbreath you get on the way from Ust Natha to the Illithid drow quest from an ogre (I forgot his name).
There is a really good +4 two-hander for non-goody-two-shoes from the Demon Knights in the Kuo-Toa lair.
Also, just use your mages. Summon some tough pets for the beast to beat up on, cast a couple Lower Resistances, and start unloading on him with some offensive action.

Oops sorry, the Skullcrusher is not available until you kill the beast in question... but the other weapons are still possible.

slight spoiler
If you have serious trouble, the easiest way to deal with Balor is to change into the slayer. If you do this you won't even need the rest of your party, just send your PC in. Only remember that you will lose two rep points

The problem is is that I have 3 mages, but none have the lower resistance spell, and won't the slayer eventually kill you?

little spoiler?
You could just give it a whirl with the mages and give his MR a run. Just keep those pets a comin'. He's a tough beast when you don't have nasty weapons. Try the Daystar's sunray as well, but you'll have to get close to him.
The Slayer... I think you'll be okay, at least for a while (WHA HA HA HA calls the laughter from within).

And I almost forgot... Nally's Polymorph Self into the Gnoll: +3 Halberd with 3 at/round. That'll learn 'em, heh.

I always just leave the rest of my party back in the passageway....have my pc go in...change form, do the battle and then I change back...I've never had a problem doing this....

Yes, but it depends on how long you maintain it.
As for your mages, Lower Resistance is one of the most useful spells in the game. Be sure you get all of 'em a copy, and soon. It's the pathway to successfully casting damage and negative effects on enemies, especially more powerful, resistant ones.

If your Mages had Lower Resistance, your Mages could kill the balor in two or three rounds with Magic Missiles while your Blade distracted it with a Defensive Spin. Oh, wait--you don't have Blade, either. Too bad.

Unfortunately, some of the more powerful monsters are immune to Lower Resistance. And some of them are immune to lots of spells (Stun, Confusion, Hold, etc) even without any magic resistance. You gotta know your enemy to defeat him.

I found the only way to kill it was to turn into the Slayer, other than that i had alot of trouble. Use your clerics higher level spells on it like sunburst, that did alot of damage if I recall.

I just arrayed my fighters around him and beat on him until he died. I did have some heavy duty weaponry by this point though. I don't understand why you are stuck with such lame weapons at this stage. Blade of Roses? Flail of Ages? Blackblood?

True...but Lower Resistance works very nicely against dragons....especially when you have a sorcerer or two who can cast it multiple times
