The best type of armour depends on what you are skilled in. My personal preference is for heavy armour, my character is currently wearing a full set of ebony. Superb protection but you have to have a high heavy armour skill. Also because it is so heavy it tends to limit the amount of other stuff you can carry; a severe problem if you specialise in the bow because that doesn't increase you strength. You can get an almost complete set of ebony from a Dunmer in the Daedric shrine near Ald Velothi. He will reluctantly cough it up ;) No helm or shield though. You can get a helm from the Sarano tomb - fighter's guild quest in Balmora. I finally got a shield from a golden saint who was loath to part with it!

Medium armour is a good compromise, orcish and indoril are both very good. Just find a Daedric shrine, most have orcish worshippers who will be very annoyed to see you and who will again, reluctantly provide you with orcish armour. Indoril you can get by solving the murder mystery in Vivec.

With an archer though you might be best going for light armour, chitin or some such. The only really good light armour is glass but it is hard to find. There are other posts on here describing where it can be found.

Can't help out with the bow though. I have the Bonebiter bow of Sul Senipul from the Urshilaku quest but it is hardly spectacular. I don't really use a bow, I prefer my violence up close and personal :D

*spoilers regarding location of light armor and good bows*

OK-Light Armor is what I suggest for the same reason stated by Silver Knight. If you dont want to search for where to find glass on the forum-I might help you out a little. If you are an evil character or a simple murderer-than you can go kill an orcish woman in Suran in the outside-she wears glass pauldrons and armor, I think. If you are a good thief-try robbing the Redoran, Hlaalu, or Telvanni vaults. If you are a moral character you might want to take a risk and go to daedric shrines-sometimes warriors carry glass armor or weapons. Also there are a couple artifact pieces of armor that are lightweight-though most artifact armor is heavy. So I wish you luck finding all this stuff described. If you want to be a more traditional person, wearing armor suited for your level-than chitin is the first step of light armor.

As for bows-There are 4 bows I can recommend. If you have conjuring ability than try the bound bow-it only costs 6 magicka to cast and it doesnt weigh anything. If you are a murderer or an immoral character than go to Ghostgate where one of the head Bouyant Arminigers(religeous warriors) has a bow called Auriels Bow-It does more damage than an ordinary bow but isnt magical. Within a crypt in the grazelands lies the bow called the Bow of Shadows which allows a "cast when used" ability of chameleon or invisibilty. It had another ability that I dont recall. The 4th bow I recommend is the Bow that Silver Knight stated. But, unfortunetly it isnt that great of a bow. I think the arrows you use will characterize how good your long range attack is.

glass armor

Another good place to find glass armor is in the fighters guild within Ald Ruhn.

On the same floor as Percius Mercius stands (bottom floor)-there is a door with a high level lock on it. Use Ekash's Lock Splitter to open that door-but dont get caught. Inside there are 2 chests. The chest that is unlocked at the end of the bed has glass armor. There are good pieces of glass armor in there. There is a second chest in that room that has 100 lock on it and inside I believe there is orcish armor-some sort of medium armor if my memory serves correctly.
