right, 1st thing to do is kill the creatures with him (because they are the ones sheilding him from harm), once they are dead you can get to work on desther, he may seem hard but after giving him a few good slaps he gives up!
2nd, if you are still dying before getting him to give up, a quick soltion is to use your stone of recall, go and get grimclaw, and let him beat the s*** out of him while you stand back and admire the decor
once desther is done with you can use the recall stone again and go and get tommi back
thats it!
have fun

Use the Stone and switch Tomi for Daelan (you might have to go back a bit in the game). Use potions (bless, speed, barkskin, cat's grace...) Most important, make sure to take out all of his zombies first - they give him strength.

Hey Hey Hey! That title alone for your post is quite a spoiler
Sure, it's pretty obviously if you pay attention to the game, but newbies won't know that.
Should definately change that title!

1. Imbibe tons of potions ahead of time. Give yourself and your henchman Speed (Haste) to double your attack output. Invisibility will get you in the door nicely. Barkskin will up your AC a little. Bull strength will increase your chance to hit and do more damage. Aid will pump up the HP. Endurance, Cat's Reflexes, & Clarity will help out your general attack/defense.
2. If you use Tomi, have him use ranged attacks. If you're using Grimgaw, have him go toe-to-toe. Linu could probably help with casting Turn Undead and protective spells.
3. Get a Greater Brawler's Belt (~11K gp) for bludgeoning attacks, and the Greater Swordman's Belt for slashing attacks. Each of these does -20 damage reduction on their respective attack type....better than AC if you ask me.
4. Kill the undead first, and leave the 5 d00ds making the Pentagram until afterwards. I don't think that Deshtar attacks until you've killed at least two of the casters. Then, hurry and kill the other three casters while Tomi concentrates his arrows on Deshtar. Finally, once everyone is dead except Deshtar, you can turn your attacks on him.
As a Paladin, I just waltzed right in with a bunch of potions in my belly, my GSBelt and left Tomi outside the door (Stand Your Ground), and then got as many undead inside my Turn Undead radius and zapped them. Most of them ran away like little girls, and then I brought Tomi in to help me deal with them. I then concentrated on the casters. Since Tomi was attacking Deshtar, he turned his attention on Tomi instead of me. This gave me a nice open back to attack once all of the casters were gone (they're easy). I think that Deshtar got 25 hp off of Tomi and zero off of me. The monk (second guy) in the Gauntlet (Black Lake Tavern challenge) was tougher than Deshtar for me.

I strongly aggree.
EDIT:
Unfortunally I can't alter the title and have it show a new on the main page, only the in-thread one will be altered.
Dazzo - you should see if you, yourself can alter your title.
You are giving away a major spoiler for capter 1.
Please be more considerate when choosing titles!

Summonned my pet, and rested, that makes the summon pet option back available, but the pet himself doesnt go away, so when he dies, you can haev a new pet =)
after that, i rushed in, killed the ritual things in a flash (makes the other undeads dissapear aswell) -did this .very. fast so Desther didnt have the chance to summon that badass chieftain- and attacked Desther. i used 2 potions of cure moderate wounds and a potion of fortitude.
Pet got killed, resummoned him, and we fought Desther.. Desther never really attacked Tomi, wich was handy cause Tomi had all the chance to sneak attack him, wich was very handy =).
Well all i can say now is that i was probably lucky.. i didnt got under 50% of HP at the entire fight and not even my dire wolf pet died. I forgot -gasp- to search the other rooms on that floor =/
And entered chapter 2.
and now i have a L8 Tomi =) wheeee

You really want to make that fight seem sad, do it with a straight up paladin. I did it... I was level 8 and my charisma was at 19 with items when I entered the room.
I just ran in and casted turn undead...
Desther and I believe a Ghoul Lord (might of been a Zombie Lord) were the only survivors, hehe.
Sharwyn took on the Ghoul Lord, while I bounced Desther around the room with my Harbringer Kin +1 and Knockdown (which is IMHO the most useful skill for a melee in the game).
Fight lasted about 2 min...if that.

Wow, I had a hard time with him, altho I guess my choice of char/henchman isn't the strongest:rogue /w boddynock. What I did was smart, hehe(rogue aspect), I ran in and immediatly started attacking desthar, knowing I couldn't hurt him. That wasn't the point. At this point Boddynock casts mage armor on me, raising my ac to about 21 (low yes, but im a rogue /w studded leather +1) Desther, in his zeal, casts some badass area spell, that knocks out all his own guys, but that I save from. Hehehe, idoiot. Then I take out the ritual creatures, and focus on hi. I dual-wield, and am a lvl1 ranger, so get no penalties, and start attacking him, /w help from spells. All this with no potions too. Altho I have to admit the AI for Boddynock is terrible. He keeps casting some spell that has no effect, instead of casting burning hands to take out the massed undead. Also he casts sleep and daze and scare, instead of melfs acid arrow/flame arrow/magic missle, hell anything to damage that mother! The hardest time I had was with those pirates in the sewers, cause they all gang up on me, and the gnome don't cast no halpful spells. Man, if only I could control him. Thats my only gripe with the game.

My only problem was that Desther cast some sort of instant death spell on me. I think he also casts Harm. It also didn't help that Tomi's sneak attack doesn't work on undead.
BTW, I'm starting Ch.3, and instant death spells are pretty much my PC's only weakness. Even though he's a level 13/3 fighter/rogue, they still seem kill him about half the time. He's immune to almost all the other status abnormalities, and has high enough HP to last through most fights.

L1 rangers DO get penalties .. right? they just get that .. two weapon fighting or ambidextry at L1.. wich doesnt stop ALL the penalties, just a bit

You mean penalties to their attack roll? With their two-weapon fighting and ambidexterity feats, the penalty is -4/-4 (main weapon/off-hand weapon). If the off-hand weapon is light, the penalty is reduced to -2/-2.

Desther is a weakling with a BAB of only +6. Get any combination of armor with a total AC of 26 and you're practically invulnerable to his blows. That fool Tomi charged in with his bow, got stuck and got slaughtered and so did my pet spider, but after I removed all the undead and ritual creatures, I could go toe-to-toe with Desther for hours. Actually, since my character is also a weakling when it comes to bashing stuff, it really did seem like hours.

Hmm...with a dexterity of 20+ it never mattered what armor I wore, I still had high AC, but I remember Desther beating on me pretty good. On the flip side, I had a rather hard time hitting him (I was a lvl 7 fighter/lvl 1 rogue). Actually, the first time I fought him (and died) I was only a lvl 6 fighter because I forgot to level up (doh!

).
