still confused - game over? **spoiler**

Post by free_fall »

Well, I'm still confused.

After obtaining Moon-and-Stars, I was expecting to continue with the Trials, but the Wise Woman said some guy in High Fane was worried that I hadn't completed the prophesy and to go see him. He sent me to Lord Vivec and Vivec sent me to kill Dagoth Ur.

Something didn't seem right about this - wasn't I supposed to complete the Trials first? So, I started again before visiting High Fane and tried to do the 4th Trial, but the first Redoran councilor I talked to, Serethi, also told me me to go see the High Fane guy.

So I broke down and did that trip and now Dagoth Ur is dead and everyone's calling me the Nerevarine.

Am I still supposed to complete the Trials, unite the Houses and the tribes and drive the Empire from Morrowind?

(If so, there's a slight problem in that I killed the Redoran councilor who kidnapped Serethi's son - he won't vote for me even tho' I rescued his son. I tried continuing on after defeating Dagoth Ur and found this out. Figured I'd better check in here.)

The game channelled you into one of it's two "backpath" routes, which it does if certain conditions have been met. These include 'breaking' the main quest, as it appears you did with the Redoran councilors.

You missed, hmm, about half the main quest -- but still got to where it eventually leads.

Speaking of which, what is the "main path" route? I got channeled into one of the backpath routes, too - without breaking the main quest, AFAIK.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

When did you get "channeled into one of the backpath routes"? (Where did you go wrong in the plot? I truly believe I did the quests completely for the plot.
“Caw, Caw!” The call of the wild calls you. Are you listening? Do you dare challenge their power? Do you dare invade? Nature will always triumph in the end.

I'm not quite certain - after recovering the Moon-and-Star, the Wise Woman said the same thing as mentioned by free_fall. I did not attack anyone in House Redoran. I noticed several other oddities in the game - after completing a Temple quest (before starting the main quest), Sleepers in Balmora started thanking me for saving them.

Aarrrggghh!!!

Well, it was nice of the game to let me play the end despite having broken the main quest.

This game was interesting enough to play again sometime, not right away though as I've spent an pretty intense 6 weeks on it.

At least, if I do play again, I know where that d----d Cavern of the Incarnate is.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice and tips. I hope I was able to help out others on occasion.

Okay, this entire post is loaded with SPOILERS:

The main quest consists of first learning about the prophecies, becoming the nerevarine, then gaining the support of four ashlander tribes and the three great houses. After which you get the support of Vivec and the temple, and kill Dagoth Ur.

Backpath route 1: any character can do this at any time, without completing any of the rest of the main quest. Kill Vivec. Learn how to use wraithguard from Yagrum. Kill dagoth Ur. This is the only route vampires have to win the game, but any character can do it this way.

Backpath route 2: If you have a reputation of 50 or have broken any part of the main plot, you'll eventually get directed to Vivec. Any of over a dozen characters in the game will give you these directions. The designers set it up so that if you broke the quest in ways they both saw and didn't forsee that you'd still be able to win the game. Also, that if you build enough of a reputation, you don't need to worry about gaining others support.

Well, I *did* have a rep of 255, since as far back as I can remember; wondered why it never went up further.

As far as losing the main path in the plot problem: I really dont know. I followed advice from people within the game and I did what I was told and I completed the plot pretty cleanly. Dont know what went wrong with your plot.

Tybaltus -

Did some research: at my 201st save, Day 35 gametime, my rep was 2; by my 301st, Day 84, it was 255 and has remained there through my last save, 1539.

It might have something to do with that nice Hlaalu lady in Balmora who kept giving me money, now that I think about it. I swear, we were just friends.
