Did you defeat the Intellect Devourer as well? After defeating the captain, the ID will pop out, a little dog-like creature that also must be defeated. If there are any zombied guards around, it will first run over and possess one of them. You might check and see if there's a guard off in the corner somewhere.

Hmmm, this problem I think has come up before in this forum. Might try a search. There might be a problem with the ID vanishing between hosts. If you've walked all over that room and haven't found the ID, all I can suggest is trying to redo the fight but before taking on the head jailer, go around to each guard and persuade them to leave. You'll take a few shots, but it might be easier in the long run.

Just killed the Head Gaoler AGAIN after I loaded in a saved game way back in the game...happens the same thing again..he just drops a haleberd and some ironwood..so I just say no more NWN for me...

Do you have the latest patch?
As our friend Nygma says, after you kill the Gaoler and all of the guards, you should have to kill the intellect devourer that's been possessing them. You might also check with Bioware to see if this is a known issue.

Apparently lots of people have had this problem. Here's one approach you might try.
Bioware forum thread
According to a Bioware rep, this is caused by either using auto-saves or by using a save made within the first five minutes of the game or in the prison area. Patch 1.21, due out "maybe next week", will fix this problem for new games, but apparently not for ones already broken.

From what I've read from another thread it's save related, you can't use autosaves here, and regular saves there...it's a bit complicated...what I got from that was that we're only supposed to use quicksaves in the prison until the new patch comes out...I guess.

Won`t you be able to get the item from the diving pool?

An item that ends up in the divining pool has to be dropped first. Otherwise you could go to the divining pool in Ch. 1 and pick up all the quest items, head over to Aribeth, and you're good to go...

I dont think it's save-related...I used "normal" saves in the prison NOT quicksaves, and now it works fine..

I'd be surprised if it was solely a matter of using normal saves, otherwise a lot more people would have this problem. Assuming Bioware's correctly isolated this problem, I'd guess that it's some oddball sequence that, coinciding with the use of saves, ends up corrupting some people's games. Since I have no idea what circumstances would culminate in these problems, I'm going to be a bit wary of using auto-saves and any manual saves in the prison or first five minutes of the game.
If I'm going to start hacking the game, I want it to be for fun, on my umpteenth time through, and not because I'm stuck on the first pass through.

Its not solely the use of quicksaves in the prison that is causing the problem. I know for a fact I used qsaves in the prison and have never experienced the problem with the disapearance of the devourer.

I have copied this from the Bioware link posted above:
****************************************************
"Do NOT read this if you think cheats/cheaters suck. I have been playing NWN since the day it was shipped to the nearest store. However, no offense to Bioware, it's a damn buggy game in some parts. After tinkering around for a little bit, I figured out how to get the INTELLECT DEVOURER to spawn ANYWHERE, and how to kill him. First, go to the PRISON! It HAS to be in the prison if you don't want to kill everyone in sight. Then type ~. This brings up the console. Type dm_spawncreature M1Q2_DEVOUR exactly as typed. The devourer will spawn, attack you once, and will then become neutral. How do you kill him, you might ask? This is another console code- dm_cowsfromhell. Several cows will appear from a gateway to the 9 hells and destroy the intellect devourer... and everyone else alive. NOTE- it takes MULTIPLE tries 'cuz the devourer has an assload of HP... 4, to be specific. He will then DIE, and the brain spawns on the ground. I hope this is helpful to everyo looking to complete NWN. It was totally impossible for me, because the devourer wouldn't spawn, so I did this ONLY to get the brain. I did not enter god mode, change stats, give xp, etc. If you want to, you can do all of that with commands such as GiveXP (#) and others (press ~ then TAB) but I won't... note, I wouldn't consider this cheating, as it's just solving a bug in the game through- what else?- Debug mode. Hope I was a help, all you people with semi-buggy copies "
****************************************************
I am having the same problem.....the intellectual devour will not spawn for me..... I am not the most sophisticated with computers.....could someone please explain the exact process of how I can type in the cheat that will hopefully enable me to finish this quest?
To the best of my recollection I have only used manual saves in the prison....I read at the Bioware forum that autosaves were creating some kind of game corruption within the prison.......Or maybe I should have been using quicksaves?????

*sigh* I really would prefer to avoid starting another game......

Ok while in the game hit the ` key. The key next to the number 1. Then type in DebugMode 1. That will enable cheats to be done. Then hit the ` key again. Type in dm_spawncreature M1Q2_DEVOUR it is case sensitive so make sure you type it exactly like that. If you don't want to cheat to kill it just right click on it and attack it like normal. If you do want to cheat, then hit the ` key again and type in dm_cowsfromhell. To turn Debug mode off, hit the ` key and type in DebugMode 0.

@Datt
Thank you
Okay...this is weird....I typed in the code exactly as mentioned. The first time I did this I spawned a summuned dire badger which was automatically a party member..... I tried it again and I did get get the intellectual devourer (it replaced the badger), however it it was still a member of my party, and there is no way I can remove it without unsummoning the thing.....nor can I attack it.........

Try to do the dm_cowsfromhell trick. That might be the only way for you to kill it.

I ended up resorting to this, and it worked like a treat....
*sigh* I had been hoping to actually do this battle....oh well....hopefully next quest I will be able to see how my little half-elven rogue is shaping up.

Ok, I have only ever used quicksave (backing up a final actual save before quitting the game). My son an actual save. We were both in the prison, I was using a quicksave, my son an actual save. Both of us had the problem of the devourer not spawning. I used the cheat on both occasions and we both managed to complete the quest.
@DW - re the dire badger! LMAO!!!
![Big Grin :D](./images/smilies/)
The first half dozen times I tried, I summoned a dire badger. Then I realised I was typing in the word 'DEVOURER' instead of 'DEVOUR' in the cheat. When I typed in devour, I got the actual chappy!
