how do i steal the statue of lathander without getting caught?

Enter at night. Wait til priest takes a walk and disappears from your view. Steal the statue and get out.

didnt work. a message apears (an alarm sounds thru the temple) and the guards go hostile. i could kill them all using only korgan but i dont want to.

I did this only a few days ago and have done it numerous times before. Are you sure the priest is completely out of sight when you make the theft?

Are there any downsides to killing the priest and guards? The alarm went off on me and I killed everyone, didn't lose any rep.

You almost never lose rep. when killing red-turned ones (i cannot recall a single cause).

BTW, what is the point of the Statue of Lathander? I stole it as well, but have not seen any neccessity (sp) for it. I'm already far into ToB...

I had to steal the statue as my first quest for Mae-var to get the thieve's guild, (instead of the necklace from talos temple)

The temple went hostile on me and I had to kill them all, and it was pretty tough (it was early in the game) they chased me out into the street and it was a VERY near thing but I got em.

Ahh... that makes sense.... I went to Bodhi instead of the Shadow Thieves...

These are two different quests. You can work for Renald (finishing off Mae'Var's guild and having Edwin join your party) and still side with Bodhi later (instead of siding with Aran). However, if you're a thief Bodhi won't offer you to join with her.
