The things you get from your henchman is automatically upgraded when you solve their quests.

My personal favorite is Daelan, but since you are a fighter, you may want to try the spellcasters also. Regarding amulets, this is an item spoiler, highlight to read:

Daelan's amulet gives you STR, Grimgnaw's give you CON + a little spell resistance

Well, I believe the game experience is enchanced by having a Henchman. Since you are a fighter, you probably shouldn't take another fighter. Spellcasters are good choices

The following are SPOILERS (sorta), highlight to read

Linu is a good cleric, her spells are good and you get good healing. (her stories are also pretty funny) Boddyknock's AI is terrible, he target good spells at whatever he sees, and same goes for Sharwyn. (you can download the enchanced Henchman AI script though...)

You don't actually have to travel w/ henchman to get his items. Simply do the following:

Talk to them when you are at least lv 6.
Talk them to get their story
Tell them to level up
Talk to them to get the second part of the story
Dump them for the henchman you want
when you level up, get him and let him lv up, then talk to him again to get the last part of the story, and if you have the item they need, you can get the item right there.

I have tried both.....
If you want sheer force and are inclined towards power playing, I would suggest Grimgow.
If you want strength but a less evil character, go for Daelen.

In my experience Grimgow tends to die less, but bear in my mind, I am playing a rogue, so my character is less able to help out in battles.

I found that henchmen detract from the experience, but that's just me!

The spell casters are problematic because they die easily and they waste their spells.

The fighters are better but I just think they make the game too easy.

Tomi is just a pain in the ass.

Linu is my favorite. She has the following advantages:
- She doesn't waste her spells as much because many of them are situational (e.g. turn undead only for undead, healing spells only if injured).
- She has high AC so she doesn't die as easy as the other casters
- She can fight, but she is not totally uber like the monk and barb. I.e. she helps you but she doesn't dominate.
- She has a better thought out character and dialogue than the rest.

I strongly recommend the henchman AI mod. It stops spell casters from wasting their spells. I used it with Linu and she rarely used a spell; when she started casting I knew that the approaching foe would be a tougher fight. She still wasted her turn undeads though.

Grimgnaw is a killing machine. In most situations he can just mow down the enemies while my main character sits i nsome corener because of that damn greater mummy and his pals put fear on him.

I also found Linu very useful. Currently she has AC of a whooping 39 and she can cast full heal spells multiple times a day. She also has a spell that first dealt over 300 damage to a "boss" and later over 630 on another tough opponent. Could somebody please tell me what that spell is? A large red beam comes down from the sky and deals negative type damage. Another good spell she knows is one that stuns all enemies in a 30ft radius. Very useful sometimes.
On top of that, I gave her a nice morning star with +4 enchantment, 1-6 sonic damage and 50% chance of causing slow at DC14.

*edit* Edited AC of 49 to 39. Just checked and it was 39, not 49 like I remembered.

Izgoth: The 300+ damage spell is probably Harm, and the stun spell is Word of Faith.

I have actually used all of the henchman and liked them all from a role-playing perspective except two. Tomi was incredibly annoying -- fortunately I don't have to use him -- and it was all my character could do to keep offering Grimgnaw a dirt nap. ;) Sharwyn is an interesting character, but I did not find her all that useful in battle. Game-wise, I use Daelan mostly since my character is not a fighter and he is an impressive melee tank. Especially when you have the inventory patch that allows you to beef up his armor and weapons. But I very much enjoyed Linu as well -- she reminds me of Yshania for some reason. :)

But I thought you have to touch the beast to do harm. She could cast it from a long distance.

LMAO!! :D It is funny, as soon as I heard her story I had to take her onboard! despite the fact that we only have only one level of rogue between us! :D She actually had me thinking of Viv, but then it could have been Ysh - anyway, it was the scenes in the tunnels beyond Gwalchmai's bedroom in DF that she reminded me of! ;)

I had an amusing incident with Linu here http://www.gamebanshee.com/forums/showt ... adid=19206 :)

SPOILER-ISH

I usually stick with Tomi unless I'm playing a rogue or some sort. There are so many damn locked chests and trapped doors in this game it's really a pain in the ass to get by without him.

I guess you can try Sharwyn, she's alright, easier on the eyes that's for sure, but she can't disarm traps, and she doesn't pick locks as well as Tomi can. Her spells and cantrips should be a nice change of pace.

As for the Henchmen equipment, you can get those without having to play with a certain henchman. Just remember to finish up their quests before the end of each chapter.
