Is this a worthwile skill, i.e has anybody effectively used it to convert animals to fight for them? Im gonna try a ranger, and am wondering if I should put points into it, or go for pick locks/disarm traps. I no that rangers and druids can talk to animals, but I don't think that this has anything to do with the above mentioned skill. So im asking any ranger vets out there if there is any purpose, other than a roleplaying one, to put points in animal empathy.

I play a druid and have used Animal Empathy. I must admit that so far none of the charmed animals have fought on my behalf, they just become friendly for a short period of time before reverting back to being hostile...so I would say it is a role playing feat

I've had a couple of animals fight for me just by chance, but a deer isn't the most effective weapon. The duration isn't really long enough to make it a reliable stratagy. Just something to play with. Not very effective against hostiles. If you have any henchmen or companions they will attack it anyway and negate the charm.

I am a ranger, and most of the time the animal just turns friendly for a short period of time. If there are enemies around, they seems to fight them though, ie if you charm one of several animals in a pack.
However, in the beginning of Chapter 2, I used animal empathy on this Dire boar and
he is still with me in the end of the chapter. I have done most quests, and altogether there are many hours of play, but he is still there, fighting for me. In fact, I have tried to get rid of him (I'm a ranger, I don't want the little boar to get hurt, right) by selecting the disband/free animal option, but
it is impossible. Nothing happens. So I guess I've just got myself and new pet, and my spider a playmate
