Multiclassing a Sorceror

Hi
I finished my first game as a Monk, but especially at the later stages of the game I found that it was way to easy, so now I'm looking for a bit more challenging way of playing the game.
I've pretty much got my mind set on playing some sort of Sorceror, but would like to multiclass to get some bonuses from other classes.
I'm fairly new to the 3E rules, so I'm not sure how to do it.
I was thinking about having my sorceror throw offensive/destruction spells, and also be able to use a high damage bow/crossbow. And to add a few HP.
So I was wondering if a combo of Paladin (3 levels - to get TurnUndead), Ranger (1 level - to get the archerythingy going), and Sorceror (16 - only 8th level spells, I know..).
And regarding stats, I'd max charisma (for Sorc and Pal) and Dex (Ranger, bow).
Is this totally insane, and if so - how do I improve ?
Thanx in advance
