I read game banshee tips and hints. And they suggest characters if you prefer solo. Who'd played this style before? Anybody ever win the game with only one character?

if you really wanna play bg solo, it's still not like diablo. why ? very simple: diablo2 sux, bg doesn't eitherway.

I mean how could that be posible?
Different bosses need different ability to defeat them. With only one character alone, how could he/she be able to go through the whole game. I am just curious if somebody here did finished the game with only using one character.

I just did (finished yesterday) but that was with a fighter/mage/thief.
It can be done, used a lot of traps and backstabbing!!!! ans spells like cloudkill work great!

A lot of the people here have won with only one character, and it's possible because you can always get equipment which gives you abilities you don't have.

So much equipment....

Sometimes it feels easier soloing, than it does taking a party of 6.

No Akuba the enemy hps are the same. As a matter of fact it can often be tougher , because in some situations the amount of monsters faced is related to your current level, and when you solo you level very fast.

You just cant seem to believe that people have done it solo, well many do, your going to have to just accept that :)

You will encounter much less enemies when soloing.. for example in firkhaags gave when there is a room with vampires.. there will be about 12 if you have 6 characters in your team.. if you solo there will be 3.. :D ;)

Still unbelievable.Let's say you fight a vampire. And since you dun have restore greater spell and also you dun have negate plane spell, you have to spend alot to cure the drain energy status. What about golems which can only be hit by blunt weapons and you will have a tough time if you are not proficient in that weapon type. What about mages that have protection from normal weapons, there's no dispel. And what if they cast stun on you, you are a gonna. Not to challenge you people, but just very curious on how to deal with this kinda a problem.

There are alot of people who have soloed. I have so far soloed a ranger/cleric, an assassin and a sorceror. I have since long ago removed my xp cap since I dont like the idea of having limitations. So my Ranger/cleric was ridicilusly powerful. He was multiclass btw. When I encountered Irenicus the last time I wad at least lvl 25/25 something.
One of the hardest thing is as you say when you get stunned, held etc. Fighting shadow fiends can be very risky. Mazes will instantly kill you so they must be avoided at all costs. But if you are a r/c you can allways summon the nice skeleton warriors. Healing is easy since you get all the potions yourself.
Its not really as hard as it might seem, sometimes it can be easier. No need to keep check of six people to avoid having them running into a trap etc.

which brings up a nice topic, how to deal with traps? I'm planning on diong a solo (fighter, I love them) (Nearly done with this game. I'm in hell!), but I think I'll take edward with me just for the magic aid. is that a smart thing?

Akubi, IMO you should simply try.
Soloing is very hard in the beginning,
very easy in some situations and again
very hard in others.
When it seems you haven't enough skills, you'll discover that using some smart plans
almost anything can be done!
Again, try it yourself, it's easier if you
take a char with many abilities, like a F/M/T, but you can try any char.
Look at the baldurdash site, there's a complete walkthrough made by this guy, he soloed a PURE MAGE!!!!!! Even through ToB.
Although having read it a little, I can say
he used some cheese tactics!

Akubi, there are several items in the game that provide protection from level drain, two that are available before you even have to look at a vampire (amulet of power). Untill you have tried it , you should keep an open mind.

I soloed a Beastmaster, but only through Soa. I solo'd a sorc, and Fighter/Illusionist through TOB.

Now I work on AI for the enemies, and expansion mods for the Infinity Engine games.

I've soloed SoA with a solo assassin (was boring, though, without character interaction). The problem I had with golems was not that you had to have a certain weapon type to hit them, but the fact that they're among the creatures immune to backstabbing. However, they are vulnerable to traps, which severely damage, if not outright kill (at higher levels), even the Adamantite golems. Thief traps go through most mage potections, as well. In dealing with vampires, remember that you don't have to battle them in those not-so-random encounters in the streets. I use the Scroll of Protection from Undead when dealing with undead nests, letting it wear off for the Boss encounters (Bodhi), and use the staff of air/fire/water to summon some help. You don't need to be proficient in long swords to take advantage of Daystar's Sunray ability. Beholders, for me, were a lot more problematic - I just avoided them where I could. Dealing with illithids: put off any encounters until you have the ring of free action. Since an assassin specializes in hit-and-run attacks, mind flayers aren't too difficult once he's protected from being stunned.
