Nothing ever does happen. Requardless of what you say to them they'll leave with an opinion influenced by you, but you'll never hear of 'em again.

There is a conclusion. If you tell them to stay together then go talk to the drunk downstairs he says they went off on a crime spree robbing a bunch of places and thathe'd like to give a kcik in the butt to the person who made them stay together a.k.a. you.

It's just a little story about some of the local people. I think you're supposed to be surprised when you learn the truth about the couple. When you first hear about them, you might think that they're just a couple of innocent kids whose parents are trying to keep them apart. If you talk to them upstairs, you find out that they've been on a crime spree together, and THAT's why their parents want to keep them apart. The drunk downstairs might mention that he lost his farm when his barn burned down. If you talk to the couple, you find out that they were the ones who set the barn on fire. You can encourage them to stay together; if you do that, the crime spree will continue. I guess it's supposed to teach you a lesson for meddling in other people's affairs. Otherwise, they will decide to break up and you can watch them say goodbye to each other.

It's for comic relief, if you will.
I personally found both the Romeo & Juliet dialog and the gnome's tax problems to be hilarious.
BTW, the Elvis Presley painting was a sheer touch of magic...

My POV: I think it's a satire of the Ultima VII "love boat" quests (as they were called back then), when you were supposed to bring together ill-starred couples, and gain experience for it. In this case, the couple are rather ordinary and unpleasant, and giving them any solution at all wins you absolutely nothing.

That's kind of funny. I never would have thought of killing them. Just out of curiosity, what made you think of it?

In my humble opinion, this Romeo & Juliette story wasn't funny for me. I would rather say I found it indifferent, at least. No comparison whatsoever with the gnome in Government District
Anyway, thanks for all the replies.
Cheers
P.S. I had thought of killing them both, too, but I didn't. I suppose it was their manner I had found a bit annoying.

That's because it's a tongue-in-cheek satire (again, as I see it), rather than simply straight-forward humor. Both BIS and Bioware have done satire before--the most notable being the Modron Maze in PS:T, which is a satire on all those Dungeon Hack style games, complete with repetitive monsters, squared, empty rooms, and "goodies" on the ground.
