Most of the NPCs from Baldur's Gate seem to show up in SoA somewhere, with a couple of exceptions.
Ajantis - Ends up killed by you
Alora - No show?
Branwen - Tutorial
Coran - Forest of Tethyr
Dynaheir - Killed by Irenicus' men
Edwin - BGII npc
Eldoth Kron - No show?
Faldorn - Takes over druid grove
Garrick - still displaying his ineptness, this time in Temple District
Imoen - BGII npc
Jaheira - BGII npc
Kagain - No show?
Khalid - Killed by Irenicus' men
Kivan - No show?
Minsc - BGII npc
Montaron - Harper's quest
Quayle - Aerie's mentor
Safana - Teams up with Coran in Tethyr
Shar-Teel - No show?
Skie - No show?
Tiax - Asylum
Viconia - BGII npc
Xan - Tutorial
Xzar - Harper's quest
Yeslick - No show?
Has anyone noticed Yeslick, Shar-Teel, Skie, Kivan, Eldoth, Alora, or Kagain in SoA or ToB?

Kivan is (I think) added in the The Darkest Day.

The Alora soundset was added in with Shadows over Soubar but I didn't play enough of it to find out if she's actually in the game.

Xan actually is
in the game, just not in if you don't "tap" something a little. We think that maybe he was supposed to be added, but nobody is really to sure. Read about it
here.
I wish Alora was in BG2: she was an awesome thief with her lucky rabbit's foot.
We didn't need Branwen or Yeslick - We have enought Clerics, thank you very much.
By the way, as I recal, that little fink Safana doesn't
team up with Coran really... (And after all that Treasure Hunting I did for her in BG1... The nerve of some people!).

@Aqua-chan - But if they had put in Branwen and Yeslick then they could have gotten rid of Anomen! A consummation devoutly to be wished!
And
of course Safana teams up with Coran... she just doesn't let him in on those details she feels weren't really relevant and would only confuse him.

I added this Xan-guy (never played BG1 unfortunately
) to my party long ago, I found him scrolling through SK once.
He has got no dialogue for you, so all you get is a boring, suicidal-sounding but awfully intelligent mage.

There's also enemies too, such as Tazok in the Windspear Hills. Also, since I have never played BG1 I hear Drizzt is in it, or at least that's what I gathered from the conversation you have with him.

You obviously don't know me very well... I'm one of the few who actually
likes Anomen (But Aerie can go.
)
I still get mad at that little Thieftress, though. Her attitude in BG1, and now this? There just is no pleasing some people.

Au contraire, your reputation as Anomen's Greatest Champion has spread to the farthest corners of these boards.
I couldn't resist the chance to get a rise out of you, hence the "
".
But alas! You refused to rise to the bait.

where do you see Ajantis in bg II?

SPOILER
Ajantis is one of the paladins that you mistake for an ogre in Windspear Hills. Keldorn and Anomen recognize him.

As everyone knows Anomen rules anyway, let's get back to more important stuff.
From where did Bioware get the idea of terminating the BG1 NPCs? They had such potential! And the continuity would have been even greater. I want the extremely intelligent Quayle
, of course, not whiny Aerie! New portraits and a few changed stat in addition to everything that makes the BG2 NPCs so good and the world would have been perfect. Well, BG2 would have been at least... As a constant replayer, I would gladly have accepted a little less depth of character, if time was the matter, in exchange for a larger selection.
Eldoth as an arrogant evil Blade, Skie could have matured into an efficient Assassin, Ajantis would be a Cavalier of course, Kivan a brooding Archer, Safana a charming Swashie, Garrick maybe a Jester or Skald, Faldorn would have been perfect as an Avenger...

I can see why they didn't keep the NPC's through to Amn though:
Would you want all the same people as before? Personally I liked having a few new choices for NPC's (I'd miss Jan Jansen)
As well, with the huge amount of NPC interaction in BG2 as compared to BG1, it would have taken a TON more work to add the 21 other NPC's from Baldur's Gate, not mentioning the 5 other ones that appear in Candlekeep. It would have been nice, but I can see why they didn't do it.

As it was, they had to cut back on NPC-related dialog and events due to deadlines. The proof of that lies in what was left out, or half-done--for example, Jan's second quest (the one where you help him against the gnome mafia).

I didn't know that even existed (albeit at the design stage) but I always wondered why the original was left hanging. Sounds like there was so much that didn't make the final game or didn't go beyond an idea. Dave Gaider was posting details of them on another board (Minsc subplot -- was Boo really super intelligent or just another hamster, possibly not the first or last Boo? Viconia betraying you in the underdark! Viconia is a werewolf! etc) but sadly stopped before giving away more (missing Jansen inventions was one I was looking forward to reading about).

That's my point - I would have liked
exactly the same NPCs as in BG1. Of course that might take more time (25 vs 16) but as I said, I would volontarily trade in some depth of character for a larger selection.
There is no NPC available in Candlekeep (although Imoen lives there with you as well). You probably mean BG.
On a sidenote, I would have loved an add-on from Bioware that adds more NPCs to the two games. It's a shame that ToB only added one, and one you can't obtain in SoA at that.

I materialized Xan into my party, and he's a major improvement from the BG Xan. He's got Magic Missile memmorized, and he's got an astounding 25 Int. I didn't keep him around though, because he wouldn't add much.
I would like to see someone do an add-on of all the left out NPC's that didn't die. A mod like this would add so much to the game. Not hack n slash like TDD but depth in mass quantities. And it would also be awesome if they didn't have to cut sidequests short, like the Gnome Mafia.

I agree.
They should have stick with all the old ones and added the present ones.
It would have been great.
I also agree that NPC dialogue must have been upped.
But we got a great modding community that can do that now.
I hate it when companies put half a game.
I rather have to wait like i did for Warcraft 3 and play a damn great game, then one that is half finished.
