Networking Home Comps

I have been doing some research on networking my 2 home computers up to the internet. I am using a cable connection and would be using WindowsXP as my OS. I would like to avoid using a router and from what I found out I would need a crossover cable and obviously another network card. SO I was wondering what the heck kind of crossover cable should I get. Are they all the same. And if I am gonna network my comps do I need to get any special kind of network card or will the average card do? Thanks for your help.

All crossover cables are the same, the only difference being length. All you need is a network card in each PC and the cable. Basically any network card will do, as it will drop down to 10mbps due to no 100mbps hub to control it.

I'm trying to do the same thing but somehow I can only get either file-sharing or multiplayer games to work but not both.

I'm using Win ME on both computers. The protocols are IPX/SPX and TCP/IP. I figure I've got the bindings wrong.

You should only need TCP/IP.
Also, check your workgroup names are the same on both machines.
