A friend told me it was his favorite game, and we like a lot of the same games. So, should I get it? I love morrowind, and I played a lot of rpgs but never got to play DnD, and he has. So, should I get it?

Yup, but if you do get the one that comes with Tales of the Sword Coast. It's probably my favorite game, and it being a low level game, puts more emphasis on gameplay rather then getting the best items. Go for it.

probably. BG2 is a better game, but very different to the first, and if you do like either, it's great fun to play through both with the same party. at the same price (including add-on packs) i'd probably get BG2, but the first is usually cheaper, a different style of game, and hugely enjoyable in it's own right

You understand that asking that question bears remarkable similarity to asking if you should buy a ford car at a ford owners club. But I would also have to throw in that it was a great game and had the best story of any of them also you'll grow to love your character and some of the npcs so you will enjoy SoA and ToB more.

Most people tend not to have 500$ ready at hand.

I agree, get BG, the game is great, and the entire series is very addictive. And, your in luck, as most of these games are cheap as hell now. You can get fallout and Fallout 2 for 10 bucks in one package, and Planescape torment is 10 bucks as well. 20 buck = 3 damn fine games

i THINK bg RUNS ABOUT MAYBE 30 BUCKS WITH THE tALES OF THE sWORD cOAST Expansion.

Hmm, as a D&D n00b, you might find bg1 a tad too difficult. I only started playing it a few days ago, after enjoying bg2 so much, and already I love it to bits. However, I know alot about D&D, I have the core books, etc. I think bg2 is a bit more newbie friendly, though it will still take you a long time to learn the system.
The games are not impossibly hard, in fact, if you know the system, they're quite easy to beat really. But for newbies they can be quite daunting, unlike arcadeish games such as NWN and MW. So keep that in mind if you do decide to buy them.
Oh, one other thing in case you didn't already know. In the BG series, you can control a party of up to 6 characters, though you can play it solo if you like.

I guess that to create a 1st level character in BG1 and then play it throughout all levels till ToB and (divine) Ascension

is "the most correct way to play the game". I did it once, it took months and it's been really satisfying.
But I don't think I'm going to do it again.
Actually I stopped playing BG1 (forever?) the very day I put my hands on BG2.
Obviously I loved BG1, but this was years ago.
@Esco: one must know what he is going to get before spending money imho... so keep in mind: no kits-at all, no romances-at all, no monks barbarians half-orcs wild mages sorcerers either to start with.
Rangers cannot double wield (no character can in fact), thieves cannot set traps, and dualling makes no sense for a long time (if you plan to export your pc to BG2 later, I mean).
And if you want to play a mage for instance, remember that you get just this 1st level mage and Imoen (1st level thief) to start with, and most likely end up getting killed by the first couple of (normal) wolves you meet out town or by a bunch of kobolds...
Which could not be exactly some people's idea of having fun
(I thought such a warning was needed, but indeed, it's only mho again)

Not really, if needed you can pick up Xzar and Montaron, or if you're a RPer can have lots of fun trying to kill the mage outside the friendly arm. Otherwise, usually even with a mage, you can defeat most enemies until you get backup. It's really not all the hard of a game if you do the sidequests, otherwise it becomes... interesting.

I didn't know much about dnd in 1998 when I got BG and I never had any problems understanding it. BG is my favorite game of all time and the series are worth playing in order from start to finnish with the same character.
