First you need a character. The main things behind your character is his story, stats, class, and race.

Story- You make it up

States- Role 4 six sided dice and drop the lowest one. Repeat 5 more times. The six results are asigned to your six stats. Strength, Dexterity (Agility), Constitution (toughness), Intelligence (How fast you learn), Wisdom (Common Sense), and Charisma.

Class- Pick a class. There are the Barbarian (Rugged wilderness warrior that relies on brute force), Bard (Performers and Jack-of-all-trades), Clerics (Holy Men), Druid (Treehuggers with spells), Fighters (Warrior that win through fighting skill), Rouges (Theives and Skill users), Rangers (Wilderness warrior that wins through stealth and quickness), Paladins (Holy Warriors), Monks (Hand to hand men that practice mental focus), Wizards (Spellbook users), and Sorcerers (Wizards that use inate magic).

Race- Pick a race. Humans (the standard but verisitale and quick learners), Elves (Agile guys with pointy ears), Dwarves (tough as the stone they mine), Halflings (think Lord of the Rings Hobbits), Half-elves (slightly less pointy ears with human versitility), Half-orcs (Big, Gray, Strong, Angry, etc.), and gnomes (tricksters and inventors.)

Then you asign skills and pick feats so your character is unique.

Lastly the DM (Dungeon Master A.K.A. the guy who plays god) makes a world that your character is in and puts him/her through hell for power/riches/exprience/the good of the world/etc.

In the Players Handbook there is a character creation cd. Use it instead of doing it manually, much easier. :)

You might not want to know everything, it's quite fun when you find that druids can turn into animals :) And things like that.

Highlight if you really want to see.

And if you have Masters of the Wild (druid/barbarians/rangers handbook) you find that druid SHIFTERS can turn into undead, dragons, beasts, and whatnot (wait, did I just reveal too much?)
