Dual-wielding?

All right, I have a question.... I've played through SoA and ToB several times, and I'm just now discovering the original Baldur's Gate. It's not quite the same, but still very cool. My problem, or question, rather, is how does a character dual-wield? Or is this possible? If someone could give me an answer and make me feel dumb, I'd really appreciate it.. I'm sure it will seem obvious once it's pointed out to me..

Neither can you in IWD or in PS:T - BG2 was the first game to implement this feature.

All right.. lol.. I was prepared to feel stupid either way, so thanks... I guess playing BG2 first just led me to expect it was possible, but I didn't understand how it could be done. Sorry if that was completely obvious and all..

In IWD, Rangers can get an extra attack per round when weilding a single handed sword with no shield. This is supposed to simulate dual-weilding i think.

I've heard the same is true in BG1. Someone mentioned this in regard to Minsc.
