i am playing along and i am in the underdark now, and discovered many tunnels leading off. the one that is at the bottom, where your cursor turn's to the stairs symbol goes to the elder orb, (was he meant to be easy? he was with me!), althoug there was more that i didn't explore, (because i'm allergic to beholders), but did i miss anything important down there? btw, a good way to kill beholders is to get the cloak of mirroring, and stand right infront of a belolder (Hee, Hee, Hee, (*more evil snickering*), anyway, the one at the west edge of the map goes to the place full of those tadpole-eating creatures, (btw, how do you awake demogorgon, or the 'five' or whatever? and get the reward, i tried putting tadpoles there but that didn't work, anyway, then there is another tunnel at the south of the main area, which i haven't tried yet, but where does it go?

To wake the demon knights in the west tunnel, summon any animal, and move the animal to the alter. Get ready for a fight though.
I can't remember naything worth that much in the Beholder tunnels, but I only went through them once, a long time ago.
The other tunnel lead to the Mind Flayer's. Some nice XP and one or two good items there if I remember right

How far have you got in the underdark quests? If you have only just arrive, wait, and carry on with your quests...you will have a good reason to explore later on, when you're a little more prepared

.
If I were you I would explore all three of the areas, in this order - Demon Knights, Beholders, Mind Flayers (IIRC).
Use Summon Animal to summon the knights but
be buffed!!!
and ummm...there are items worth having (and XP
definately worth having in all three areas...
good luck

In addition to finding pieces of artifact items in each area - Mind Flayer, Beholder, and Kuo-Tao - there are other items to be found, including high-value gems. It's worth your while to explore each area thoroughly.

The Kua toan tunnels are nice and easy, but the deamon knights are real animals.. But hey, the loot is worth it. Seriosly worth it
Highlight for spoiler...
The mindflayer Dungoen is only really worth doing if your in severe need of exp, or you want the equalizer. It will give you major headaches unless you have a fighter/ mage theif / mage or blade capable of casting Mislead, or a mage/cleric capable of summoning skeleton warriors or at worst, invisible stalkers. The Kua Toan dungeon offers the bracers of blinding stirke, the deamon knights offer the Armour of the heart +3 the soul reaver +4 and the Girdle of stone (Or frost, canna remember) Giant strength

As they do in all spawn fights.. on the latest run through I tried to do this one without em, couse its to dang easy if you do use em but such a hard fight if you dont.. I decided to go down the challenge road
In which Jan manages to deal some 70+ dmg in several nice backstabbs, and with the amy of power mirror image and stoneskins.. Tanked the little suckers while Keldy, my pc Barbarian (Lobing Azuredge) and an mp pc, a Gnomish Fighter Illusionist (Evil Harry Dread) took them apart
A testament .. To Jans Uberity (An odd and nonsensical adaption of Uber, but it sounds fitting nonetheless or at any rate, it sounds better than Uberness)
In a battle where high mr, multiple imunity monsters with good saves show up... Jan can drop the magic and get backstabbing
GO JAN!!! (Even when your not setting spike traps or weilding Carsomyr, or telling a crazy story.. you rule)
