I know you get a XP penalty when you're multiclass and the levels are alot apart, but how does this actually work?
And where does youre race come in?

you only get a penalty for certain multi classes.

and it's all dependent on race & the levels of your classes.

for example an elf's perfered class is wizard so it does not count towards multi classing - an elf can have any one other class w/o any penalty.

if an elf is going to have three classes (wizard + 2 others) the two other classes must be with in one level of each other. say wizard - 12 ranger 2 thief 3 = no penalty.

if the other classes are un balanced wizard 10 ranger 4 rogue 2 then there will be a 20% penalty. i believe it will auto deduct the xp your char earns.

some races human, 1/2 elf have no prefered class and treat your highest level as prefered, they are the most flexible...

So if I understand correctly:

A halfing lvl10roque/lvl2fighter gets no penalty,
but a halfling lvl10mage/lvl2fighter does.
Cause rogue is the prefered class for halflings

if this is correct, whill a halfling lvl10mage/lvl2rogue get a penalty?

No, because the rogue class doesn't count towards the penalty, regardless of whether it is the first, second or third class that character takes.

Your examples are correct. To answer your final question: no, that halfling won't get a penalty.

I think of it like this:

1. If you multiclass, you get a 20% penalty for each class more than 1 level below your highest level class. So a character with classes of level 7/6/4 will get a 20% penalty, and a character with classes of level 10/7/3 will get a 40% penalty.

2. Each race has a favored class. Essentially, you can totally ignore that class when determining XP penalties. So, for an example, an elf that has some wizard levels and some fighter levels is treated exactly the same as a single class character - the wizard levels don't count. An elf wizard/cleric/rogue is treated the same as an elf cleric/rogue, as far as determining an XP penalty is concerned.

Humans and half-elves have a special favored class in that their favored class is whatever class has the highest level. All this means is that you treat humans and half-elves as if they had one class less than they have. So a human who is fighter 10 / cleric 6 / rogue 4 get's the same XP penalty as an elf who is cleric 6 / rogue 4 (i.e. 20%).
