trouble in the Chambers...please help!

Hey guys -

I'm getting crushed in the Eight Chambers (below the Black Raven Monastery) and I don't know why. My best melee guy is a 12th lvl pure fighter 21 STR, 16 DEX, 20 CON (180HP), ambidex, 2 wep fighting, full wep specialization -> AXE. Up until this point, I thought he was pretty decent. Despite the fact that two battleaxes are available in the first chamber, I can't defeat the stone monks when they start appearing four at a time. There's no apparent way to replenish hit points in the chamber, so I usually die on the fouth switch (the fifth if I'm on a roll). I seem to get farther when I use one battleaxe, as opposed to equipping them both. Does anyone have any tactical advice for this chamber? My other chars are a fighter (charismatic leader), rogue, cleric (with 1 lvl of fighter), and 2 wizards (both of whom have one lvl of fighter). My wizard's offensive spells are resisted by the stone monks, so they are pretty much worthless...

help! aaaaahhhhh!!

Well I used a pure Barbarian character to pass the first chamber. As I recall if you push the right sequence of levers no monks would come out and attack you. If this is true and if you want to cheat then each time I got one of the sequences right I would save game and keep on going until I'd make a mistake the monks would come out I'd reload game and keep on going until I got all of them right. Also you mentioned your fighter had a Dex of 16 maybe that's why you're losing HP so fast cause they can hit you easily.
My Barbarian had a Dex of 18 plus I used rage towards the end to give me a boast in HP and Str and rest afterwards. Also check to see if the monks are not resistant to axes or the slashing that they do. Because you could do like 20 damage on any hit and they've resisted about half the damage. My Barbarian was using a warhammer only.
Good luck

@ Theflob

Ah ha! I was under the impression that you HAD to fight stone monks, even when flipping the switches in the proper sequence. I've got to get back to the game and try it out...much thanks!

There's a lot more thinking involved. If you just pummel, you'll never get through. Pause the game as soon as you enter a chamber; look for the weapons stash, and examine all your surroundings. Keep in mind whatever the head monk has said about the chamber, too. He never lies.

I'm still stuck on the first Chamber...

You know: the one with five switches. If you flip a switch out of order, it resets them all, and you must begin again. As you flip them (in the proper sequence), stone monks appear. One monk appears when you flip the first, two appear when you flip the second, through five for the fifth (this is an educated guess, as I've never made it past the fourth!). I don't have a monk in my party (see above), but I do have a fine tank in my lvl 12 gold dwarf fighter. I'm getting my butt kicked. What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something? Tactical observation: there are three pedestal torches on the floor of the chamber, one of which is near the NE corner. When facing 3+ baddies, I'm able to run to that corner, and they have a harder time wailing on me all at once (heh).

Please help me!!

The corner strategy is the best, I agree, since it keeps at least 1 or 2 of your opponents at bay, waiting for their turn. And yes, inputting the right order doesn't keep you from being mauled. You'll be up to 4 monk attackers before you hit that fifth switch, and you have to destroy 'em all before you can throw the fifth one. I used my fighter, here.

FWIW, these challenges are designed for monks. That means monks are especially suited to take them. When I did them, for example, I don't think my monk took even 20 points of damage in the stone monk room.

I ran that room with an elven cleric
I gave him a few Sanctuary spells and some summoning spells. Mostly undead and one Fire elemental spell.
Had him summon two undead, then flipped a switch.
if needed, I had him go into sanctuary. This was rarelt necessary however.

order of switches in chamber one

1,5,3,2,4--save yourself the headache of resetting the whole thing. You DO have to fight monks even IF you hit the right switch in sequence, but only up to number four. After the fifth one, you win without having to fight five monks.

@Magus, if you're going to post actual spoilers, please put that at the head of your remarks, skip some lines, and then post the spoiler proper. Prevents anybody from reading it accidentally. Thanks.

order of switches

My apologies. I had assumed the post subject title was all the warning necessary.

@The Ranger

Thanks for the Cleric idea...it worked great. Didn't help me in the Thrid Chamber, though. I still can't figure out the glowing plate thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

With all my lame-o questions, you wouldn't know that I've been playing RPG's since Wizardry I on the ol' Apple II...Yep, I'm old.

Cleric seems to be the best party member I have for getting through them. I didn't understand the lightening room at all. I think I just managed to survive long enough.

Need a little help with 7th chamber

The first 6 rooms I had little or no troulbe with. But the 7th has me stonewalled. I'm just not clicking as to how to solve it. Just what is the purpose of the three blue circles.

Hmmm. yeah, that one had me going for a little bit as well.
Well it starts off with you in a room with some sort of monk. Blue circle on the floor that looks like a fountain.
The monk was indestructable to me. I could get him to near death and lying on the floor, but not dead.
When you step onto the blue circle thingy, a button becomes accessable on the wall by the door.

The Monk who oversees the challenges says (I think) that that room is too test ones ability at manipulating ones opponents inot doing what you want, or going where you want.

Bah this was easy!

Everytime you finish a room he kicks you out to your party.. All you gotsta do is just Rest til fully healed and save.. then he'll kick you to next room.

I did all of them with my sorc. Just use improved invis and you get ignored by the melee attackers. Most of the monks are immune to magic, so just give your sorc a melee weapon. This would worlk w/wizard too, but I have not found an improved invis scroll yet.
