Underdark - Silver Dragon Eggs

I'm at the part where the silver dragon asks for assistance in retrieving her eggs from Irenicus and Bodhi, polymorphs my party into a group of drow and search for Soulafien. I met him at the entrance to the drow city and we, in turn, met at the eastern region of the main Underdark dungeon; he summoned the Illithids from the astral plane and we killed them all then I rested. Now, when I try to talk to him for plot advancement he just says that he has no time for chatter because he needed to meditate. There is also an accompanying female drow which didn't speak to me at all. I then went back to the dragon and she informed me that the quest was still active and that there is little time - am I doing something wrong? Help please.

My only advise would be to sleep, then try again. BTW do you have the newest patch?

try not resting after the fight and talking to them again. also do you have TOB installed? that started a "no talk" bug that some patch's fix. the no talk bug (I call it no talk bug) makes people at random not talk to you, you just get message not even in dialouge "name appears to be busy" is that what your told when you talk to that drow female? their name and appears to be busy?

It indicated that the female drow "had nothing to say to" me, not that she was busy. And Soulafien (sp?) did actually say something to me; but it was about being too busy meditating on future events or something. No matter, I'll fight my way through the Beholder dungeon and see if that makes any difference. There's probably something I overlooked. If this truely is a bug - then I'm truely in trouble ... I'll have to start the game over.

something is wrong. after you free Phaere you should report back to the drow at that area where Soulafien is and talk to the lady there. you do not go into that mind flayer cavern yet (and since this seems to be your first time playing BG2 trust me you'll regret entering there since you don't need to go in there and mind flayers are SO hard without the right tools. but even with the tools they are still hard. just take out mind flayers as fast as you can before they can stun and kill your group)

Since when are mind flayers so hard? Not to mention the fact that in that dungeon you can get the brine potions to make you immune to psionics, mind flayers are susceptible to missile weapons with their low hit points, as well as cloudkill wands. The important thing to remember is to just keep yourself from getting stunned by cheese or stuff like amulets and potions.

mind flayers are SO hard without the right tools
I said that already but you have to beat like 10 mind flayers before you get the brine potion (which is when your halfway done the dungeon, but I admit that there are more mind flayers left in other places by then). having any paladin class with the holy sword use the TOB ability whirlwind will knock down 2 or 3 mind flayers in an instant before it wears off. also that sword makes you hardly ever stunned by the mind flayers (like 1-15 chance of it happening with that). and yes arch support is good since the immune close up fighter can take out mind flayers quicker with it. also traps are good on mind flayers if you just lure them close enough.
now we are getting off topic but do you have "baldur's gate 2 throne of bhaal" installed Ven? that can make such bugs happen. also a rare SOA bug might of happened to you (if you just have SOA installed then that's possible) try to find patch's to fix that problem and also try to free Phaere again and go to the drow city without resting first.

i dont find mindflayers particularly hard..
There just a real stick in the mud.. You need allot of summons and buffs to take em down, it taked time and gets boring after none to long even if you are beating them easily

@Ven: for some reason, there are times in the Underdark when you have to wait some days before Sola, Phaere or the mathron give you a new quest.
Resting works fine.
Going to do the Beholder dungeon, or trying some fights in the arena, or exploring Ust Natha just for fun would help using the spare time, too

Just to establish the specs:
I have just SoA installed, latest drivers, 1.7GB p4, nVidia Gf2, 256MB.
Unfortunately, I've already been through the main Kuo-Toa dungeon and Mind Flayer dungeon the moment I arrived in the Underdark. The Illithids were extremely hard - and so was figuring out exactly how to get my way through and defeat the master brain at the end. I also went in the Beholder dungeon first thing inside and was ambushed by an Elder which was subdued quickly since Korgan was raged at that the time. I picked up this thing of blood and a broken blade that it dropped cuz I thought they were important and left the dungeon immediately - things would only get worse the deeper I went - and decided to save it for later. THEN I went back into the Beholder dungeon after fighting the Mind Flayer w/Soulafien and Pharae or whoever, hoping that would fix the problem. But it didn't. So now I've been in all of the dungeons and am waiting for Soulafien to not be preoccupied with "meditation".
By the way, he and Pharae are still at the eastern part of the main dungeon in the Underdark and Pharae continues not to say anything to me. I tried about a day and a half's worth of resting, and he still continues to say that he's busy... Things aren't looking good.

Try to look to your journal, "Quests", sort quests by date, what does it say?
(This could help you to find out if now you're supposed to talk with someone, wait, or do something else)

I do remember that there is one mission, you have to wait three days for. Although I am not sure if it is the mission you are having problems with.

I have checked my journal several times and it said the same thing everytime: I was to meet Soulafien at the eastern region of the Underdark within a certain period of time and not to be late. And it still says that after I helped him kill all the Illithids. I also did not rest BEFORE going down there, because I didn't want to risk anything complicated (like this) happening. But I did rest directly after the last Illithid died before speaking to either Soulafien or Pharae.
*Latest drivers being for my hardware; and I'm 2.0 patched from the Bioware site with absolutely no other mods (besides the XP cap remover which a friend told me to d/l).

Alternate Quest Completion w/spoilers
Okay I just did something incredibly naughty. Since Soulafien & Co. were pissing me off, I decided to have Imoen pickpocket him for any valuable items. Well, knowing Imoen's thieving skills, the rest is pretty self-explanatory.
...
After killing Soulafien and Pharae and depopulating the entire Drow City (which was surprisingly easy), going in the Temple of Lloth and discovering an egg room gaurded a gazillion golems, I found the eggs! WOOHOO!

And I also noticed a journal update which indicated that I should of been more careful ... lol. Yeah.
I ended up having more fun killing all the drow out of frustration that doing their stupid quests and waiting forever. AND I gotta ton of experience. Viconia is now level 20! Mwahaha! What's more, I went back to Adalon who was superhappy to have 'er eggs back and took me all the way to the door which led to the surface! Now I'm in Suldanessalar someplace! HAHA!

The beauty of BG2, so many ways to accomplish tasks.

Well, this one is... sub-optimal... if you'd want to get Sola in your party
(Like me).
Hey, I'm right at the same point of the game! Going to rescue Phaere (crosses fingers).
I guess we will never discover if it was some bug... unless it happens to me too... never happened in previous games anyway...
@Ven: happy you've found a way out somehow! Brute strength can kill even
bugs
