Just wondering

I have played all the BG games and just started IWD II. I was wondering if IWD 1 was worth buying now and playing. The reason I ask is I know several people who played BG II but not 1 and I reccomended that they play 1 as well. Does this apply to IWD as well? Of course this is opinionated but I would like to hear what people think :)
I am a long way away from finishing IWD II but I know I will be craving more Infinite Engine games when I am done, and the only one left for me to play is the first Icewind Dale.

IWD 1 is IMO is a very good game considering it's price nowadays. It's the same IWD 2 action (on a lesser scale of course...it being the ?third? IE game). Not so much character customization as IWD 2, not so many spells....but it's still worth the buy if you want to know what happened in the past, and are wondering. Plus, it's got a pretty good plot.

IWD is a linear dungeon crawl. But its worth it, especially if you can get it on budget with Heart of Winter (which improves the game considerably).

So there are NO battles/activities of note outside a dungeon? If so are there any bigger areas or is it all small and cramped? Also, how is the pathfidning? In a dungeon there is nothing more annoying than bad pathfinding

Pathfinding it good and there are also some outdoors battles there. But since your an IE fun you would most probably like the game...
You should also get HoW as Grunt said.

There are several outside areas (Islands, Camps, Towns). The Dungeons are not cramped either. The few restricted areas make for some "interesting" challenges. :D

Jup, buy it. The game is very good, but the best thing is that it's so cozy(especially in Easthaven and Kuldahar mmmmm.........). :)
