A few days ago a friend and I got into a conversation about what either of us would do if we won the lottery. The thing that stayed with me from that discussion was the enormous psychological shock that huge winnings must engender. Just imagine....after living a fairly modest life...being in the position of having more money than you could ever really know what to do with....it must be truly overwhelming. Presumably, this also depends on the person...on how much they would allow something like that to alter them...or their lifestyle.

So...how do you think you would respond to suddenly coming into some kind of massive win? I am not necessarily talking about how you would spend or give away your new fortune (though that is certainly part of it)...but rather how would you react, in the emotional or psychological sense, to the impact of such an event?

Personally....I think I would be in shock for quite a while and chances are that I would spend time travelling....just with a backpack....partly enjoying the freedom to do so..and partly in order to reflect on what had occurred....

Simple

Pay off debts.

Purchase a nice house near the beach in Southern CA. (Fully purchase)

Get a relativly nice car, nothing too fancy.

Go to school lightly and never work again. (Spare work I enjoy)

That or just buy the Brazilian womens soccer team... mmm

I think I will donate them to pandas in south-east Asia, and continiue living my normal life as if nothing has happend.

Me 2 probably, but only part of it. After all we as humans are naturally self-centered at birth (no arguing about it) and we wouldn't go agaist our nature now would we?

I would give my parents, brother and good friends a nice piece of the pie and donate something to charity (with focus on helping homeless people and animals). Before spending something myself I would try to get used the idea that I didn't earn it but nevertheless have it, I guess I wouldn't waste it on things I didn't want before. Probably a nice, old house with a big garden would be the first and most important idea.

After my initial shock, i think i would go out and shamelessly flaunt it in front of people. Then i'd take my friends with me on a vacation or something.

I think I would invest a good portion as well. I'd more than likely buy a chateau in the wine country of France, perhaps, and do some traveling. Alternatively, I would like to buy an old manor, one with a grand study, and gloomy basement...collect medieval weaponry, exotic animals, books, etc...

I would certainly acquire at least two very fast cars. The Ferrari F-40 would be one.

I believe the window of limitless possibility would more than likely result in me quitting my regular job, so I could devote my time to writing.

I would want to pursue those things which interest me, and so I would probably wander for a time as I learned how to hang glide, fly a plane, climb mountains, and travel the Sahara. I would take it as a chance to discover myself.

First of all, I would get a few neccities for em adn my family like the payment for a plot of land to put our restaurant, and then invest in that, making it big. Then I earn money too!

Not to throw a wet blanket on anything, but most people who win the lottery actually end up spending their winnings and revert to the lifestyle they had. But that being said, I would first make sure my family is financially secure. Then I would invest in real estate. A couple of thousand acres in the countryside. Land never really depreciates out there. Then in no certain order, its off to see the world. Especially Australia & New Zealand. Charities then nice cars (actually an H2). Then I'd probably be close to broke.

Firstly, I'd pay off my damn student loan

Then it's new car, house, party party party. The usual. I'd probably invest a fair chunk of it too, and live off that. No more work, yay!

As long as the money stayed in Kentucky then, you could give it to anybody.

Me, I'd lock myself away in a padded room with all my loot and roll around naked in it for all eternity. Well, at least that's what I think Monty Burns would do and he is my role model.

If that didn't work out, I'd invest a bunch, pay off all my debt, and send my parents on a long vacation of their own choosing. Charities, friends, and other family members would receive multiple benefits as well. I'd like to think I'd keep my job but as long as I had enough to live reasonably comfortable on, the day would come where I'd snap and say, "I don't need this job, I rich. Go stick it." This would open opportunities for other less stressful vocations like pharmaceutical test subject.

Don't you already do that? At least on payday before you deposit it?

Yeah, but that novelty wore off quickly. Rolling in one's isn't as nearly as erotic as rolling in fifties

I wouldn't change anything in my current lifestyle since I'm disgustingly satisfied and happy with my life. I'd donate the money to charities and medical research I know do a good and important job.

If it was a really massive amount of money, I might save a bit for myself and give to family and friends.

Let's imagine we're talking about a near infinite about of money (the kind which would put you in the top 50 of richest persons alive).

I'd invest a part in long-term stock options and banking accounts, put up a number of smaller bank accounts to live off and donate a part to medicine, human rights and enviroment activists.

I'd also start several companies. A couple of which will be medicine deloping where I'd be partly working (I'm planning to study medicine next year) even though I wouldn't need to financially.
One of the other companies would be a company which researches the various "charity companies" (can't think of the enlish word for "goede doelen") and reports which of them are least corrupt and most effective in their cause.

And I'd probably take over the world, but that's another matter
