I am trying to use the backstabbing attack in Baldur's Gate but can't seem to set up the right situation to attack that way...any help in how to best execute the move would be most appreciated.

- Find a peasant.
- Press the "Hide in Shadows" key.
- Wait until succes.
- If no succes, try again.
- Attack.
That should do it.

For backstabbing you have to be invisible or hidden in shadows.
Also remember that you have to be behind the person to backstab.
And only thiefs can backstab
And in case of a fighter thief, remember that u have to use a thiefs melee weapon (no bows)!

Actually, I think there is a bug in BG that allows anyone who is invisible to backstab. I know I was able to backstab with a Bard, though maybe this means you have to be a Rogue...

I think bards were considered a subset of thieves, as you imply.

Never knew that,
can bards backstab?
and if so, how many times more damage do they do?

Same as thieves:
1-4 x2
5-8 x3
9-12 x4
13+ x5
I was playing without a level cap so I got up to X4.

I didn't know that! And it's great timing because right know I have a bard in my party, for the first time.
Are bards able to use backstab in BG2 as well? I should think so.

No, as I said it was only a bug that allowed it in BG1.

Bards make to much noice to backstab with all their endless ennoying singing and stuff
