Overriding Minsc

I downloaded an edited version of Minsc (as a barbarian) and I was trying to put it in my override direcrtory, when I discovered that there were already some minscX.cre files there!

Provided that I didn't put them there on purpose before  , I'm wondering what mod could have done that (and what would happen if I replace them)...

Any idea about what mod could it be or how to find out?
I have Ascension, Kelsey, Sola, Item upgrade, Ritual, Valen, Improved Illych, Imoen romance...
(Ok, almost everything).
But can't imagine why one of those mods should need to alter the minsc.cre files ...

Were the files of the same length and date? If so, perhaps one of the mods you already installed had the "new Minsc" mod in it.

Alas I have to say no, no, and no :(
1) Different date (the ones in the override so old that I could think they came with ToB... Actually, I can't remember installing any mods before ToB!).
2) Different size (the older alarmingly being larger than the new ones)
3) My new Minsc should be a Barbarian, but Minsc is still a ranger in all of my games so far, so there's no chance that I already installed it!

I guess I just have to backup the older files, try the new ones, and see what happens.
But I'm curious: does anyone else notice the presence of Minsc.cre files in their override directory?

Probably the SoA/ToB official patches or even Baldurdash are the source of these files.
At home I have a back-up override folder with nothing but the official and Baldurdash patches applied. I may check it out for you if somebody here does not do it first.

Thanks, I would appreciate it very much if you can do it!

Now that I think of it, I have a backup too... it was from before installing Ascension... but it could provide some clue anyway, who knows...

The following files are included in the Baldurdash patch restoring Minsc's cleric spells (from the ReadMe file):

MINSC8.CRE,
MINSC9.CRE,
MINSC10.CRE and
MINSC12.CRE

those sound like bioware format and type...

if you pick up keldy from the radiant heart at different points in your game, he will be level 9 up to level 12...so if you did not accept minsc in the beginning, depending on how much elapsed game time has gone by, he will be level 9 thru level 12...

this is actually how bioware handles the characters if you pick them up late in the game....

Progress report:

@Jackofclubs: I have no Baldurdash patch, still I had more MinscX.cre files in my override directory than the ones you list!

I checked my pre-Ascension backup (a very old backup) and the Minsc files were... different ones. Yay.

I copied them all in a specific backup folder and put the new ones in override.
Nice to see that SK understands what's going on and lets me see the contents of the files...
(Still can't figure out the reason of their existence).
Anyway, if I start a new game now Minsc is a Barbarian.
Too bad that in my game-in-progress he's still a ranger...
If I summon him from the console, he's a barbarian (and I can choose various levels depending on minsc7, minsc9, minsc14 (!) etc.)
Only problem is if I do that, I don't know how to send away the old Minsc and I end up with two Minsc :o

I guess I will keep both of them for the current game. The idea is too fun :)
Evil, be appalled! The Minsc brothers are coming your way with an unusal amount of boots and hamsters !!
 :D

hate to say it, but,

have you thought of simply editing the saved game via sk, and making minsc anything you want???

i usually sk him to archer, cause the kit rocks...and he is very good as an archer...

Yes, I thought of it, but I don't want to make Minsc "anything I want", I want to make him a standard Barbarian respecting all the game rules. So it will require to start a new game and create a Barbarian myself to check all the attributes (what's the code for "Immunity to backstab"? And for "can't wear plate armor?"... And what about the "Boo" ability?)
See what I mean?

(I'm pretty sure you're a lot more skilled than me at editing characters, user!) :D ;)
But me is me, and me thinks "Why to do that if someone else has already done it?" ;)
Actually, Minsc Barbarian is part of a pack wich includes a lot of various kits and classes for almost all the npcs in the game...
Nice idea. Just somewhat lacking in the readme...

"Effects Immunities (Here's the general affect, long list after)
0x00000065
0
# (put #'s from list here, for specific affects)
0x00000001
0
100
0x00000001

263 is Backstab (this actually resets backstab to x1),"

got this from the sk forum....

now cant wear plate armor, can be overridden with use any item ability....

boo is the item that gives you minsc enrage...boo, the little rodent is like a power item, and added to a quickslot will give a character minsc enrage...minsc enrage is rather funny, its like half barbarian enrage and half berserker enrage... :p ;) :D

I do aswell have the minscx.cre files and I just cleanly installed it and ran the official bg2 TOB patch. The patch is probably where it was added.
