Finding my way

It sounds embarrasing but I have only ever very speculatively played fallout, I always found myself drawn in by the wonderful introduction (best ever?) then I would get into the game and just kind of lose interest, I tried several times to get a grounding but I found it quite difficult to get anywhere.
So what are some general suggestions for improving early on, once I get going I should be okay but at the start I am just floundering.
*goes away mumbling about ineptitude*

Try only concentrating on Fallout, don't play other games, read ALL dialouge, take your time with EVERY quest\mission, stop playing when you get tired, or lazy. And last but certainly not least, Role play.
Btw, DAMN you have many posts!

Sleep's paid by a secret alien organization to spam.
I had problems with Fallout. I like to be leisurely and examine everything, but the original game but that time limit on your activities. The dev team had such complaints that they removed it in Fallout 2, and it was much easier to play through the game and just enjoy it.

Try not to get to involved with makking a good character, make a cool one. Play like they would, it doesn't really reward indepth roleplaying, but a certain attitude(Badass, caring, dastardly). Having a carring unarmed fighter thats doesn't care where he punches is almost always harder to play, then the goodly, improved mark 8 pulse cannon.improved plasma rifle
But much more rewarding

Something I know all too well
My SPD is still in the 15's
If you want similar numbers just become a holistic web designer with too much time on his hands
Though watch out kids, it's more addictive than cola
As for Fallout I find it interesting how there are three divided opinions, I like the idea of reading everything etc, getting to grips with a game and really concerntrating on a plot hasn't happened for a while. So what kind of character should I go for, sharp shooter, packhorse or something akin to Bruce Lee? it probably won't be a while till I start playing it again...still gives me a chance to get reorientated

Well, I would chose a "Mini-Gun man", with alot of personality. That way you get nearly all out of the dialouge, and you can still kick ass!
Btw, remember to pick "Karma-Sutra Master", now that gives some interesting dialouge.

I know!
I know exactly how you feel. I don't know how many times I have started that game and made it to the middle and then gave up, its not even that I stop enjoying it. Its like I am programmed to quit, now that I lost my CD I don't think I'll ever complete the game.

Well, you certainly miss a lot of good stuff.

My Fallout career started with trying the demo of Fallout 1 and thinking - hmm - seems great and didn't think much of it.
Years later I bought Fallout 2 and played it through 2-4 times and not touching other games. I was hooked
Then I was lucky enough to get Fallout 1 free with a computer magazine and played it though 2 times in a row and then the Fallout 2 again. Fallout 2 suddenly had so much more debt because I know knew Fallout 1.
After this I bought Fallout: Tactics and loved it (have always loved such tactical games - and this was in Fallout univers)
But as always with such games I am destent to re-start the game umpteen times in search for the "perfect char. for me"
(think I restarted Fallout 2 like 15 times before making it to the second city)
So how somebody can find Fallout 1+2 boring enough to not play them through is beyond me
I can only advise that you give it another try and stick with it through the first couple of hours, and when you character has gained a couple of levels (or 5) and still think it is dull, then it is certainly not something for you - and no same in that (I for instance didn't like IWD and expansions
)
But imo it is good games with a very solid and intersting story line and it is worth at least a decent shot

innovate. instead of going through the whole melee > small guns > big guns > energy weapons malarky, create a little stealth ninja assassin and make a fortune from selling weaponry and ammo. try ammassing as many supporting characters as humanly possible. join the brotherhodd of steel. become a made man, a boxing champion or a porn star. play rival gangs off against each other. spend all your skill points on healing, speech, etc. and get other people to do the fighting when you have no choice. go on a crusade against slavers, or become a child-killing grave-robbing slave-trading psycho. basically, think wierd.

Strongly dissagree here - I found the Plasmarifle/Turbo Plasmarifle and especially the Pulse Rifle (electric) - both energy weapons - to be way better then the gauss rifle I think you are mentioning.
The listed values for the gauss (electromagnetic projectile) is 32-42 where as for the turbo plasma is 35-70 and the pules rifle is 54 - 78. These numbers alone speak their value.
Very few enemies uses Telsa armour, the only armour where there is a significant difference between the DT/DR for normal and electric.
On powerarmour normal is listed as DT 12/DR 40% where Plasma is listed as 10/40 and electric as 12/40.
On Harden powerarmour the values are normal: 13/50, Plasma 13/50 and electric 13/50.
Advanced Powerarmour lists the values: Normal 18/55, Plasma 15/60 and Electric 15/60.
That means on Advanced powerarmour a normal shot will do:
(guass is considered normal - and without other modifiers)
(32->43) - 18 (DT) - 50%(DR) = 7->12.5 (without other modifiers)
Electric will do (pulserifle):
(54 -> 78) - 15(DT) - 60%(DR) = 19.5 -> 31.5 (without other modifiers)
And this is not counting the fact that the gauss uses 5AP for a shot, where as the Plasma and Pulse uses 4 AP for 1 shot.
That means you can get 20% more shots in with the Plasma and Pulse then gauss.
Just looking at the base values, I will say - use the Pulse rifle when it is availble for you.
And btw there are loads of ammonution around for Pulse and Plasma - and 2mmEC ammo is more rare.

The plasma weapons are not worthless, just impractical IMO due to the time it takes to find the really good ones (San Francisco). So my question is, at what point in the game do you start building up your plasma weapon skills and what do you use for a main weapon in the mean time? The guass weapons get the job done and by the time you find them you should be 100% in small firearms skills.
Usually I start building up my energy weapon skill when I take the perk "Tag" - iirc (been a while) around level 12-15 or so. (at that time small guns usually am around 125-150%)
Untill then I most often use the Sniper rifle (yeah - it is expensive in AP - but that range (same range as Gauss btw) ......
).
If not using the Sniper Rifle - I generally go with the Assult Rifle (with modified clip of course
).
Another weapon I mainly use is the .44 Magnum revolver. (for almost all close combat)
Reson for this is the low AP cost (4 AP) wich makes it ideal with the Sniper rifle - if the enemy is close.
I actually killed all thoese Wammingo monsters in the mines - only using the .44 magnum revolver.
(blew them away with aimed shots at the eyes)
Reason I don't recommend the Gauss, is I find 2mmEC ammo way to scare to recomend the gauss (.223 FMJ and 5.56 is just laying around
) and you don't really find a decent amount untill late in the game. And at that time, the Turbo Plasma rifle is availeble with more ammo.
Of course all my experience is with "snipe" characters - and all my characters was made to do most damage possible with the improved criticals, Bonus rate of fire and of course the sniper perk.
