HoF - how can I tell?

I recently started a HoF game.

Of course, having imported my lvl 15/16 chars with their +4 & +5 weapons, they're just rolling over everything in their path so far (I just finished destroying the dam).

When does it start to get hard?

Golly, you should notice a significant difference right from the beggining. Check your auto-saves, they should say "auto-save <HoF>." If they don't, you're not in HoF mode. Basically, the goblins that you fight from the very beginning are a solid match for a level 15ish group.

None of my auto-saves say <HoF>

However, the HoF box in the Config program IS checked and the slider is at the top.

As an experiment, I went to game options in the game; the difficulty slider is all the way towards my right. I moved the slider all the way to the left, saved, exited - restarted and loaded that save, the slider was all the way to the right again.

That's odd. I just started HoF with my level 16/17 party and my main figher already took some serious hits from the goblins at the docks. Did that happen to you Freefall ?

I don't belive the difficulty slider can be slid once in HoF. Another way to check is to look at the items in stores and that you've won. In Targos, can you buy the Golden Heart of <charname>, or just the plain, Heart of <charname>? I don't think HoF worked the first time I tried to activate it either. But I sure could tell when it did work!

No, just the plain old Heart of xxx is available in the store.

I've now tried uninstalling & reinstalling the game, setting it for HoF, then loading a save then resaving but nothing seems to work.

Checked the .ini file - difficulty is set to 5 and Nightmare Mode (which I'm assuming is HoF) is set to 1.

Aaargh! Getting frustrated.

You'll know you're in HOF mode when you drop a 15 HD fireball on a group of goblins and they keep coming (They're also worth something like 281 XP each in HOF mode).

Just submitted the prob to Interplay tech support, hopefully will hear from them next week.

Well, Interplay tech support did supply a solution to my problem. Unfortunately, it involved starting the game over again.

Having already completed the game once and just now returning to Targos from Shaengarne in my 'supposed' HoF game, I am, frankly, too bored at this point to start over again.

I will, of course, save my new 'real' HoF game to return to at some future time and will continue on with my 'supposed' HoF game in a desultory manner, as it's kind of amusing to just roll over everything with high level characters (sure makes the game go faster!) I'm curious to see if those darn Dryders kick my party's butts now. And I've *not* patched the game so I can try the II bug on the Guardian - had completed the game before I heard about that and just want to, like, try it out, strictly for play-testing purposes ;)

BTW, here's the solution offered by Interplay:

-Making sure HoF mode is engaged, start a new game USING ONE OF THE PRE-MADE PARTIES.

-Save game at first opportunity.

-Find some goblins and allow all party members to die. (That part was easy.)

-Reload saved game and use Party Abritration to replace those losers with my imported characters.
