what do you think?

I have some birthday money that is burning a hole in my pocket, and one of the things I am considering is a copy of IWD2. A number of people, whose judgement I trust, have told me the game is very good, and I thought I would also pose the question here.
My favourite game thus far has been SoA, I also like PST a lot. In general (unless I am in a really foul mood

), I tend to prefer role playing to the hack and slash of power playing. Bearing those preferences in mind, would this be a good way to spend my Bday money? Cheers in advance.

IWD and its successor are completely linear, combat-oriented, and devoid of roleplaying. I like the games, but I won't disguise that fact. If you're looking for a kidn of different, intensely roleplaying RPG, consider King of Dragon Pass, which you can find
here. It has literally more than 600 different plots and sub-plots, many of which don't occur in any given game, plus dons of ways you can customize the experience. It's really a unqiue game, and has suffered from being sold entirely over the Web.

If you're into role-playing, character development and story, buy something else. As fable says, IWD2 is lacking in all of those areas so unless you want to march around dungeons and beat the hell out of things, you won't enjoy it much.
I happen to like IWD2 (this is where I shamelessly plug my
First Impressions thread in this very forum), but for reasons entirely different from why I like BG2.

Agreed on everything, but...
...it doesn´t lack on character development.
You got a party of six.
Wide choice on races.
Embrace these times. I fear future CRPG focus on one character to identify with.

Great game but, yes, you might be disappointed by the role-playing aspect. Consider Morrowind, Gothic or Arcanum, instead.

@all thanks for the replies
I will likely get the game sometime, but probably when it has come down in price....

In the meanwhile I think I will play the games I have yet to actually finish, namely PST and NWN and TOSC.
